interesting topic.&nbsp; With the introduction of ChatGPT and other AI services, there is a great deal of fascination (justifiably) with the technology.&nbsp; That said, as with any technology, our duties to protect and preserve the data we use to perform our work do not change.&nbsp; A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.techradar.com%2Fnews%2Fsamsung-workers-leaked-company-secrets-by-using-chatgpt&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cchuck-wasserstrom%40UTC.EDU%7C25154a69f4e44b64eb3f08db419e36ae%7C515813d9717d45dd9eca9aa19c09d6f9%7C0%7C0%7C638175920028033560%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=KnZjLCTv0QiSNpybyg0UVnfNmAsHjRdKyl7hoqIvpp4%3D&amp;reserved=0\">disclosure of data<\/a> and information by Samsung into ChatGPT has some valuable lessons for all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UT System does not have any legal agreements with any AI developer that provides any assurance of data confidentiality.&nbsp; Therefore, putting data into ChatGPT or similar services is equivalent to disclosing the data to the public.&nbsp; Therefore, we must use the same data sharing precautions that we use every day with the new technology.&nbsp; Specifically, this means the following information should not be placed into any AI service:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Any data whose disclosure to the public would be considered a breach under FERPA, HIPAA, PCI, GLBA or any other Federal or State Statute.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples include (not exhaustive):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SSN<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit Card Numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personally identifiable medical information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial Aid information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student names and grades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, great caution is suggested with the following information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research data\/Intellectual Property<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Source code<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proprietary data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internal meeting notes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardware related information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presentation notes, emails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While generative AI may prove to be a valuable tool, our use of it is limited by our control over how data is stored and accessed.&nbsp; Please be cognizant of our data stewardship responsibilities as you explore these new technologies
