{"id":620,"date":"2024-08-22T20:16:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T20:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/?p=620"},"modified":"2024-08-23T00:36:56","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T00:36:56","slug":"ai-learning-series-kicks-off-with-foundations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/2024\/08\/22\/ai-learning-series-kicks-off-with-foundations\/","title":{"rendered":"CPE-ChaTech learning series kicks off with \u2018Understanding AI Foundations\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Despite artificial intelligence seeming instantly everywhere since the public launch of Chat GPT in November 2022, AI\u2019s rise has actually been under way for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/james-aden-76324323\/\">James Aden<\/a>, a Chattanooga-based vice president with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/cgi\/\">CGI<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s largest IT and business consulting firms, talked about AI&#8217;s evolution at the first of a new &#8220;Masterclass Series&#8221; of learning opportunities for working professionals. The series is jointly presented by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/academic-affairs\/center-for-professional-education\">Center for Professional Education<\/a> (CPE) and the Chattanooga Technology Council, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatech.org\/\">ChaTech<\/a>. He described Turbo Tax software, first popularized about 30 years ago, as an AI \u201cforerunner,\u201d in which the user interacts with the program via a series of guided questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advances in technology since then have increasingly yielded more opportunities for humans to serve in oversight rather than in \u201ctask\u201d roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to make this happen for a long time and are finally getting closer,\u201d Aden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He summed up five main capabilities of generative AI today this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Generation<\/strong>\u2014Responding to a prompt and making \u201csomething from nothing\u201d \u2013 such as generating a list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Production<\/strong>\u2014Taking information and attempting to \u201csynthesize core concepts.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transformation<\/strong>\u2014Taking existing content and changing it to something completely different. Audio AI for musicians, for example. \u201cThere\u2019s a Frank Sinatra AI, and I was able to listen to Frank Sinatra sing Snoop Dogg\u2019s \u2018Gin and Juice,\u2019\u201d Aden said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Knowledge access<\/strong>\u2014All search engines have some kind of AI built into them now, \u201cregardless of how helpful they may or may not be,\u201d he said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emergent behaviors<\/strong>\u2014The result of giving an AI platform context \u201cto understand the world and then asking it to solve problems we haven\u2019t solved,\u201d Aden said, citing an example of an AI-designed athletic shoe considered to have better met performance requirements than previous designs (by humans).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aden also noted the growing role of generative AI today in business helping with \u201cwhat used to be judgment calls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an example, he cited \u201ccomputer vision\u201d\u2014feeding images or video footage of hard-to-access structures captured by a drone, such as power generation systems, into AI for an opinion or recommendation on maintenance or structural integrity concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"880\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=880%2C660&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=2048%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=580%2C435&amp;ssl=1 580w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?resize=610%2C458&amp;ssl=1 610w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/ai\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_506917.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Left: Dr. Shahnewaz Karim Sakib, UTC assistant professor of computer science, with Dr. Chandra Ward, UTC assistant professor of sociology and director of community engagement for the UTC Center for Urban Informatics and Progress.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Aden\u2019s lightning-fast trip from the information age to the intelligence age, two UTC faculty members briefly addressed ethical issues and AI.
