Graduating with a degree is no longer enough on its own. The good news is, college gives you the tools to stand out. You just have to know where to find them and how to take advantage of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Gary W. Rollins College of Business, we understand that the job search after graduation is more competitive than ever. The average corporate job posting receives about 250 applications, but only four to six people are invited to interview. With the rise of AI and a slowing job market, it’s becoming harder for new graduates to break through. So, what can you do now, as a student, to make yourself more than just a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and truly stand out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are three smart moves to make during college that will set you up for success:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Intern early and often<\/strong>
    Experience doesn\u2019t just come from the classroom; it comes from doing. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to start applying for internships as early as your sophomore year. And don\u2019t stop at just one; having multiple internships is a great way to explore different roles, industries, and interests. Internships aren\u2019t meant to be your forever job, they\u2019re opportunities to figure out what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and where you want to grow.

    According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, around 91% of employers prefer job candidates with work experience, and 65% specifically want that experience to come from internships. Finance alum Jakari Randolph experienced this first hand. \u201cMy advice to current students is to prioritize internships,\u201d he said. \u201cMost companies are looking for candidates with one to three years of experience.\u201d With every internship, you build valuable skills and gain insights that will help you stand out in a competitive job market.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Build a network before you need one<\/strong>
      Most jobs are filled through referrals and personal connections, not just online applications. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to start building your network as early as possible. LinkedIn is a great tool to connect with alumni, professors and local business professionals.

      Job fairs are another valuable opportunity to introduce yourself to employers face-to-face. Remember to always bring a few copies of your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and don\u2019t be afraid to ask, \u201cDo you have any internship opportunities?\u201d It\u2019s always worth asking!

      One of the best (and easiest) ways to build your network is by getting involved on campus. Joining business clubs, student organizations or honor societies can open doors to valuable connections and professional development. \u201cAs a current student at UTC, I\u2019ve had the opportunity to serve in several leadership roles across campus,\u201d said Marketing Major and Student Government Association Vice President Bridgette Greene. \u201cThese experiences have connected me with people in the Chattanooga area who have directly helped me find internship opportunities.\u201d

      Many of these organizations also host guest speakers, networking events and company visits, giving you the chance to engage with industry professionals and like-minded peers who may one day become coworkers or collaborators. The more people you meet, the more opportunities you create for yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      1. Treat college like a launchpad, not a holding zone<\/strong>
        College isn\u2019t just a four-year waiting room before the \u201creal world\u201d begins. It\u2019s the launchpad for your future. The students who get hired after graduation aren\u2019t just the ones who show up to class, they\u2019re the ones who get involved, take initiative and look for ways to grow outside the lecture hall.

        Start by building relationships with your professors. They\u2019re not just here to grade your work; they\u2019re mentors, experts, and often have industry connections that could lead to internships, research projects or job opportunities. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask for guidance or let them know your career goals. Chances are, they\u2019ll have some great ways to help get you there.

        Take advantage of leadership positions in student organizations, clubs or even campus jobs. These roles are often overlooked, but they offer real experience in teamwork, communication, problem-solving and time management, which is exactly what employers are looking for. Plus, they help you build confidence and connections that can make a big difference when you’re job hunting. The more you engage now, the stronger your launch will be later.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

We host career fairs, networking events, and company site visits so students can explore industries, meet employers, and learn about career paths they may not have even considered yet.\u201d Whether you’re polishing your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 or exploring new career options, the resources are in place to help you succeed every step of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At the end of the day, standing out in today\u2019s job market takes more than just showing up. It takes initiative, experience and a strong support system.
