The knowledge gained from an internship can be highly beneficial and can help build lifelong professional relationships. Lynna Nguyen is a recent UTC College of Business graduate who took advantage of an internship with Tudor Investment Corporation in Greenwich, Connecticut and is grateful that she took the plunge.<\/p>\n

This is her story:<\/p>\n

In the spring of this year, Nguyen submitted an application with a letter of interest for the 10-week summer internship position at Tudor shortly after returning from the G.A.M.E. forum in NYC, where she developed an interest in the investment management industry. While at UTC she triple majored in Accounting, Finance, and Spanish. \u00a0She\u00a0was contacted by HR of Tudor, Morgan Nelson, for a phone interview in which she was interviewed by the\u00a0Vice President of Corporate Accounting within the financial reporting department of Tudor.<\/p>\n

She was able to arrange housing with Pace University in White Plains, New York, only 10 minutes from Tudor where she was provided with a fully furnished dorm room just for her with all of the best amenities.\u00a0The dorm setting allowed her to easily make friends – some were
\nlocals who helped her get to know the area, while others\u00a0were new to the area, too (and some were even new to the country), which made it fun for them to explore the area together.<\/p>\n

“The ease of making friends in this dorm environment played a big role in the enjoyment I experienced through this summer opportunity,” Nguyen said.<\/p>\n

During her time working for Tudor, she learned things about her industry such as: preparing consolidations for three U.S. corporate entities, editing policies and procedures, balance sheet group cleanup\/reconciliation, updating and verifying financial statements, preparing bank deposits and reconciliation support, monthly closes, compiling documentation for management reporting, archiving, exposure to fund accounting and corporate accounting, and supporting the group in daily tasks in general.<\/p>\n

Nguyen was able to develop a bond with her supervisor and gained an outstanding professional mentor.<\/p>\n

A student who accepts an internship can gain other valuable experiences outside of the office such as seeing new things. It is not always hard work, Nguyen was able to have some experience a great deal of New York’s culture and entertainment. She explored a variety of sites including: Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Statue of Liberty, Freedom Tower, Chinatown, Manhattan Bridge, Chelsea Market, the Hi-Line, Meat Packing district, and the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show.<\/p>\n

“I am really glad I took this opportunity,” Nguyen said. “Not only have I been able to learn about the industry–and the professional world in general–through the internship, but I’ve also been able to learn a lot about myself by living in a big city on my own, where I knew no one. I enjoyed meeting different people and experiencing new things that I would’ve not come to know if I stayed in Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Thank you UTC and Tudor for this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” she said.<\/p>\n
