These proteins are associated with distinct binding domains for thiolate-bridged metal clusters. Remarkably few synthetic analogs of these clusters have been prepared outside of proteins. Mixed aromatic amine, monothiolato ligands have been used as synthons for homo- and heterometallic MT-like group 12 complexes, as well as unexpected alternatives. New complexes have been characterized by a combination of X-ray crystallography, <sup>1<\/sup>H NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.
