What you ignore may get you injured\u2014or worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That certainly can be the case when it comes to Severe Weather alerts. Some people see an alert pop up on their cell phone or email and think, \u201cWhat\u2019s the big deal\u201d or \u201cWhy worry about something that may not happen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a dangerous mindset, said Tim Pridemore, emergency management coordinator for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWeather information provided by UTC-ALERT is specific to the campus,\u201d he said. \u201cWe encourage everyone to have a way of monitoring the weather wherever they are.  That can be a weather radio or even a good weather app on their phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of the weather warning technology in the world does no good if people are not listening for the message.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Severe Weather Awareness Week<\/strong><\/a> runs from Feb. 19-25 and is presented by the National Weather Service offices in Tennessee. Free online presentations will cover a new topic each day during the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, a Storm Spotters class\u2014part of the National Weather Service\u2019s Skywarn<\/strong><\/a> system\u2014will be held in the UTC Library. Click here<\/strong><\/a> to register for the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a reason why 24 of the 25 deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history occurred prior to 1955,\u201d Pridemore said. \u201cThere was no radar, little ability to push out the warning and no storm spotters to report what was actually happening on the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor all of our technology, there is nothing like having eyes on the storm, a system to capture that information and the ability to alert people in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
