Lunar New Year holds a special place in the hearts of\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>people around the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leo Tan, a UTC international student from the Shandong province in China, has celebrated this holiday <\/span>throughout his\u00a0<\/span>life.<\/span>\u00a0We wanted to\u00a0<\/span>get a\u00a0<\/span>first-hand perspective of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>this<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>long-standing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>tradition,\u00a0<\/span>so we asked him to\u00a0<\/span>give his\u00a0<\/span>account of th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>annual\u00a0<\/span>celebration.\u00a0<\/span>Here\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>his\u00a0<\/span>personal\u00a0<\/span>reflection\u00a0<\/span>of what it\u2019s like celebrating the Chinese New Year and how this holiday has changed for him throughout the years.<\/span>\u00a0[<\/span>Leo’s perspective is unique to his personal experiences and doesn\u2019t represent every country or region\u2019s way of celebrating the Lunar New Year.<\/span><\/i>]<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are your favorite memories and traditions with this holiday?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The best part of the Chinese Lunar New Year is to set off fireworks and firecrackers. I can still remember years ago when my dad spent hundreds of Chinese Yuan on a single piece of firework, and I thought he was crazy. Due to the anti-pollution law, only a small portion of people still follow this tradition. I wish people can still be able to set off fireworks during the Spring Festival. My best memory of the Spring Festival is that I received a set of toy<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0from my uncle-in-law when I was four. Kids usually don\u2019t receive any gifts during the Lunar New Year except\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>cash.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How has this holiday changed from when you were young to how it is celebrated now?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Before smartphones became\u00a0<\/span>popular<\/span>, we always went back to my grandparents\u2019 house and s<\/span>a<\/span>t around the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>table every Lunar New Year, having dumplings and watching the Spring Festival special night show.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Nowadays<\/span>, people don\u2019t give much attention to all the traditions; they focus on their cellphones instead of their families.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
