I have known since I was younger that I needed to experience studying abroad while I was in college. I found the idea of traveling and building some semblance of a life in a foreign place wildly appealing. However, I had no idea where I wanted to go and create such a life. As I began exploring options, I realized I was leaning toward an English-speaking country, and I became extremely fascinated with the idea of moving to Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia seemed like a beautiful place where the people were kind, and the wildlife was bountiful. Also, it was about as far away as I could travel from the U.S., so I knew this would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Eventually, I landed on attending Griffith University in Gold Coast, Australia through The Education Abroad Network (TEAN). I chose this program as it offered stunning beachside housing in a vibrant area with easy access to campus and travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I departed from rather chilly Tennessee weather at the beginning of February and, a few flights later, landed in sunny Australia for TEAN\u2019s five-day orientation program in Cairns, a popular destination in Northern Queensland. I spent these days getting to know my new roommates and other students from the program who were heading to various spots across the country for their semesters abroad. We got the opportunity to snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef and embark on several other adventures during this time; it was truly so exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After orientation, I flew down to the Gold Coast to move into what would be my home for the next four months. The apartment\u2019s location was perfect, as there were restaurants, shops, and health clinics all within easy walking distance. Also, we were right across the street from the beach, which quickly became my favorite part. My roommate and I made friends at school and soon decided to purchase some cheap foam surfboards to begin learning how to surf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campus was only a short tram ride away, so it was simple to get to my classes and keep up with my schedule. I loved all the interactive discussions and group work that went on in classes, as it made it easy for me to meet new people and find both local and fellow international friends! The professors were kind and very willing to share their knowledge in whatever ways they could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was able to curate my schedule in a way that allowed plenty of time for me to travel, which I would recommend to anyone. There were always cheap flights to cities like Sydney or Melbourne, a cheap train to Brisbane, or you could rent a car to drive down to Byron Bay! There was a plethora of opportunities to see so many iconic places in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gold Coast will always hold such a special place in my heart, as I truly loved the energy there. There were always free events going on, such as surf competitions, blues fests, or farmers’ markets. The general population was friendly and eager to talk to new people, which made it so much easier to learn about the area. The options for restaurants were abundant, and it was fun to be able to try so much new, delicious food! Overall, the relaxed, easy-going ambiance made me fall in love with the city, and I cannot wait until I can visit again- I might have to buy a one-way ticket next time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it may be easy to think about all the reasons not to move abroad, I advise you to focus on the positives and trust that your experience will be worth more than you could even imagine!
