The whole process can conjure up feelings of frustration, self-doubt, shame, and anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I get it. Sharing your resume opens you up to a level of criticism that you might not be used to, and you are being graded<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Really,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0receiving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a grade). As soon as you submit your resume, the pressure is on, and you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">must<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0stand out quickly. Research done by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/go.theladders.com\/rs\/539-NBG-120\/images\/EyeTracking-Study.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ladders, Inc.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0found that an applicant\u2019s resume, on average, was screened in just unde<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r eight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seconds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0So, how do you make your resume stand out<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A lot of factors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">come into play, but I am going to share\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">six<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tips that will help you craft a better resume.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. Be Aware of Reading Patterns<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/go.theladders.com\/rs\/539-NBG-120\/images\/EyeTracking-Study.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ladder Inc. study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, researchers conducted eye-tracking experiments to find any reading patterns among resume reviewers.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0What they found was reviewers typically follow F- and E-shaped reading patterns. These patterns are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">basically<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0what<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> they sound like. Readers always start on the left side working their way to the right and then continue down the page. However, readers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stop reading fully after only a few lines and transition to focusing on the left side for keywords. This is what creates the F-Shaped Pattern. The E-Shaped Pattern just includes more focus on the last few lines of text.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0When you create your resume,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0focus on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0your formatting. Try left-aligning your main headings such as \u201cJob Experience\u201d and \u201cEducation.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This will help reviewers fall into the preferred F- and E-shaped reading patterns.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>2. White Space Is\u00a0Okay,\u00a0but Not Too Much<\/strong><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When creating your resume, y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ou will want to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attention<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0white space, which is simply space without text. Too little white space is overwhelming and jarring. When I review resumes with little white space, I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0know where to start because my eyes are taking in so much content. However, if you have too much white space, your resume will lack confidence and voice.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To determine if you have too little white, close your eyes for a couple seconds. Once you open your eyes, look at your resume, and pay attention to where your gaze goes. If you have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a hard time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0focusing on an area, you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">probably have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0too little white space<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To help ensure you have white space, try to keep your page margins between .5\u201d to 1\u201d on all sides.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For too much white space, look at the bottom of the page. If your resume is only three-fourths of the page, you have too much white space. Also, if your resume spills over to a second page with only a couple of lines, the second page will also have too much white space.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3. Pick Professional Fonts <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, I know Times New Roman is the go-to professional font, but I would highly suggest exploring other\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fonts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0such as Calibri, Arial, or Helvetica. These fonts, which are known as sans serif fonts, have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">modern look to them and can help promote a cleaner design.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can combine sans serif and serif fonts (fonts that have the decorative strokes on the stem of the letters) to add dimensionality, but only stick two fonts that complement each other. Typically, you will use a sans serif font such as Arial for your headers (Education, Experience, and Community Service). You would use a serif font, like Georgia, for your job descriptions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using two fonts isn\u2019t a necessity by any means, and if you are uncomfortable picking out fonts, just stick to one.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4. Draw Attention to Job Titles<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I review a resume, I am more concerned about your job title and less of where you worked, unless you worked for Google, Facebook, Microsoft, or Amazon (you would want to highlight these).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Drawing attention to your job titles makes you stand out rather than the company.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Oftentimes, people will have their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">previous<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0employers in bold and above their job title. The problem with italics is that the font formatting is harder to read.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I also find that italicized text<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> distracts readers. When text is italicized, a reader will hone in on that information.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">em<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ber<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, you want to stand<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">out not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">your employer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take this into consideration: If your former employer is a small, local company, organizations in other states or regions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">probably won\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0know anything about your former company.
