As a\u00a0<\/span>day<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>care teacher, David Krueger spent his time creating lesson plans and reading stories to his students. While he enjoyed the eight years he spent in the child care field, <\/span>David\u00a0<\/span>wanted a career change and was interested in<\/span>\u00a0healthcare<\/span>. He knew doctors who suggested that he look into\u00a0<\/span>pursuing\u00a0<\/span>phlebotomy tech because it\u2019s a great way to learn foundational medical field skills. D<\/span>avid had a friend who\u00a0<\/span>completed UTC\u2019s Phlebotomy T<\/span>ech<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>course<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and encouraged him to enroll.<\/span>\u00a0Despite beginning the course\u00a0<\/span>day<\/span>s before the coronavirus pandemic hit, David finished strong and is now a phlebotomy lab tech at Parkridge! <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marah: What did you enjoy most about the phlebotomy tech course?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

David: I thought the instructor was incredible! We only had class in person for a couple of weeks before COVID hit and life became crazy for everyone. However, <\/span>our instructor<\/span>\u00a0stood by\u00a0<\/span>our class<\/span> and gave 110% to teaching us, even while working full time at a hospital. <\/span>I also felt that my classmates and I were able to get to know each other well<\/span>, considering the course is less than four months long.\u00a0<\/span>Whether in person or on Zoom, we always had lots of fun. We also practiced drawing blood on each other, so you know we had to be comfortable with one another to do that! <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M: What was the best piece of advice the instructor gave you?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: \u201cYou have to memorize your order of draw.\u201d That was the main thing she constantly told us, and it is very true. Keeping that advice front of mind has helped immensely in my job!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M: What was your study\/life\/work balance like while taking the course?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: I still worked as a full-time\u00a0<\/span>day<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>care teacher while taking the course. I had to work hard to do both; I obviously couldn\u2019t work on phlebotomy tech assignments while at the\u00a0<\/span>day<\/span>\u00a0care because my priority was to take care of the kids. Once I would get home, there were still things I had to\u00a0<\/span>do\u00a0<\/span>for work such as lesson planning. Then, I would get to my<\/span>\u00a0phlebotomy tech<\/span>\u00a0homework<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0To balance\u00a0<\/span>everything<\/span>, I scheduled my\u00a0<\/span>day<\/span>s out\u00a0<\/span>in advance\u00a0<\/span>and use<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0lots of to-do lists. If you stay organized and put forth the effort, you can\u00a0<\/span>work while taking the course<\/span>! I am so grateful for my\u00a0<\/span>end result<\/span>, and the hard work was worth it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M: Are there skills or lessons learned from your role as a day <\/span><\/b>care teacher you\u2019ve been able to use as a phlebotomy\u00a0tech?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: Yes! As a teacher, there is a certain art to communicating information to parents.\u00a0<\/span>The communication tactics I learned have<\/span> translated over nicely to healthcare. I talk to many people\u2013patients, doctors, etc.\u2013every day. Being able to communicate information effectively is key. I\u2019m also lucky because Parkridge has a great NICU and labor and delivery unit. I see about 8-10 moms every shift and I love talking to them about what they\u2019re feeling and experiencing. This isn\u2019t related to phlebotomy, but occasionally I have had moms talk about what their other kids are doing at home. When I tell them about my former occupation, they ask for advice! I have loved <\/span>help<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0my patients in that way, too.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M: Do you feel like you gained confidence by completing the course?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: Definitely. Initially, I was nervous to begin my first phlebotomy tech job. I was intimidated knowing I hadn\u2019t <\/span>worked<\/span>\u00a0in healthcare for years like other workers. However, the staff\u00a0<\/span>at Parkridge<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>welcoming and have helped me<\/span> along the way. UTC\u2019s course is what got me to the point I am at now, and I am so thankful to Parkridge and UTC for making my career change possible! It\u2019s been an awesome experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M: What advice would you give to a current phlebotomy tech student about the course?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: You\u00a0<\/span>are preparing for a great job\u00a0<\/span>that is very important.<\/span>\u00a0Take it seriously but enjoy the learning process. There are some things you\u2019ll\u00a0<\/span>learn<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0you\u2019ll use once a week,<\/span>\u00a0but<\/span>\u00a0there are\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>things you\u2019ll learn\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>you\u2019ll use every day. It\u2019s all important! Be fluid and receptive to what you\u2019re being taught.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: What advice would you give to someone studying for their certification exam? Do you have any study tips you would share with them?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: The instructor will drill into you what you need to know for the exam and emphasize vital points to study during class. When it comes to personal study time, I used flash cards to prepare. Whether you use physical flash cards or an online set, they are a great way to help you memorize information. Memorization is crucial for not only the CPT exam but also to draw blood correctly. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: Do you have anything else you would like to share about the phlebotomy tech course?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: Being a phlebotomy tech is so rewarding. You interact with many different people who have many different life stories. You\u2019re able to learn so much about the people you\u2019re helping and make a difference in their healthcare experience. It\u2019s just so much fun!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
