After earning<\/span>\u00a0more\u00a0<\/span>than a\u00a0<\/span>decade of experience in insurance, Diana Buchanan ended her time in the field when her mother\u00a0<\/span>began\u00a0<\/span>hospice care.\u00a0<\/span>After<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>her mother<\/span>\u00a0passed away\u00a0<\/span>eight<\/span>\u00a0months ago,\u00a0<\/span>Diana and her husband had a<\/span>\u00a0life-changing<\/span>\u00a0conversation<\/span>. Their discussion made Diana realize that\u00a0<\/span>she wanted to give back to others<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>like her mother\u2019s nurses did<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>She decided to\u00a0<\/span>honor her mom and\u00a0<\/span>start<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a career in\u00a0<\/span>healthcare, and<\/span>\u00a0she recen<\/span>tly began<\/span>\u00a0a job at Siskin Hospital as a CNA!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marah: How did you find out about\u00a0<\/span><\/b>UTC\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Certified Nursing Assistant\u00a0course<\/a>?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Diana: I spoke to Hospice of Chatt<\/span>anooga<\/span>\u00a0(who took care of my mom) and asked them how to get my foot into the \u201chealthcare door.\u201d As someone w<\/span>ith virtually no medical experience, they suggested that I\u00a0<\/span>obtain\u00a0<\/span>my CNA license. A nurse I used to house sit for knew I was searching for a course to take and happened to stumble upon an article abo<\/span>ut UTC\u2019s new<\/span>\u00a0CNA<\/span>\u00a0course. I read\u00a0<\/span>the article<\/span>, felt good about what UTC was offering, and signed up!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: What did you enjoy most about the CNA course?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: Initially, I was nervous about the course because I hadn\u2019t been in school for 20 years. However, it ended up being a great experience, and I enjoyed being able to learn new things and meet new people. The smaller course size w<\/span>as great because it allowed the other students and I to create a wonderful sense of camaraderie among us. We all had such different backgrounds but clicked immediately.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: What was the clinical externship at Siskin li<\/span><\/b>k<\/span><\/b>e? Did you feel like you received hands-on experience to prepare you for\u00a0<\/span><\/b>the<\/span><\/b>\u00a0field<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>despite<\/span><\/b>\u00a0COVID<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: The first day of the externship was especially emotional for me because I kept thinking about my mom. There was a resident who wore purple satin pajamas, and I broke down instantly when we left because that\u2019s what my mom was buried in. To me, it was a sign that I made the right decisi<\/span>on to honor her with\u00a0<\/span>my CNA work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a whole, the<\/span>\u00a0externship experience was more personal\u00a0<\/span>than<\/span>\u00a0I expected. The staff was welcoming<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and made the hospital feel like home. They made sure to include us as part of the team<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and I earned a lot of experience.<\/span>\u00a0For the first time in the 20<\/span>\u00a0plus<\/span>\u00a0years I have been working, I re<\/span>ally felt like I was doing what I was created to do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: What advice would you give to someone wanting to take the CNA course, particularly those who don\u2019t have previous healthcare experience?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: Just do it. As corny as it may sound, I keep looking at the experience of starting a new career as one my heart led me to. Navigating a new aspect of life can be scary\u00a0<\/span>because it requires big changes, but the ability to help others is the best feeling in the world. Take the leap!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: How did you prepare for the CNA state licensing exams?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: I did have a lot of test anxiety\u2014you know, doing that thing where I aced tests in class and then thought I would bomb the licensure exams.\u00a0<\/span>Of course, we were extremely prepared for the tests when the time came to take them. Tracy made sure that we were ready. For example, blood pressure was the skill that freaked me out the most. She let me come in after class hours and practice more. <\/span>Also, I<\/span>\u00a0constantly\u00a0<\/span>looked\u00a0<\/span>through my\u00a0<\/span>notes<\/span>, and there are videos on the state testing site that will help with preparation and review. I didn\u2019t want to overstudy, so I would set a time limit at night and freshen up<\/span>\u00a0every couple of days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Do you have anything else you would like to share about the CNA course or regarding your CNA experience?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D: Becoming a CNA has been the best experience ever. I have a great sense of pride in what I do. Everyone\u2019s story is different, and everyone gets into\u00a0<\/span>healthcare\u00a0<\/span>for different reasons, but I hope my story inspires others to give it a shot. I don\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>necessarily\u00a0<\/span>want to\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>e a CNA fo<\/span>rever, but becoming one has enabled me to get my foot in the door and begin helping others. I am thankful I had the opportunity to take UTC\u2019s course!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
