In May\u2019s <\/span>installment<\/span>\u00a0of \u201cPlaying 20 Questions,\u201d we are highlighting Will Watson, UTC CPE\u2019s Program Coordinator. Get to know Will, why he is passionate about\u00a0<\/span>creating<\/span>\u00a0career\u00a0<\/span>opportunities<\/span>\u00a0for individuals, and his love for the CFC and his rescue dog, Charlie.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. How long have you been in your role?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly three<\/span><\/span>\u00a0years!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. What does a <\/span><\/b>\u201c<\/span><\/b>day in the life<\/span><\/b>\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0look like for you in your role?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I spend\u00a0<\/span><\/span>most of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0my time managing projects and\/or training pr<\/span><\/span>ograms, such as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>CPE\u2019s Medical Career Academies<\/span><\/span><\/a>. I also spend time\u00a0<\/span><\/span>collaborating and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>communicating with students, prospective students, instructors, co-workers, and stakeholders.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. What do you enjoy most about working at CPE?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Simply put, I enjoy what I do, who I do it with, and where I do it at.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4. What motivates you to get up and go to work every morning?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

My position grants me the opportunity to change lives by providing individuals with educational and training opportunities that create direct paths to careers rather than just jobs.<\/span><\/span> The increase in quality of life not only has an impact on the individuals<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>but\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0their<\/span><\/span> families and the generations to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5. What is the biggest lesson you\u2019ve learned while in your role at CPE?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As with all things in life, curveballs are often thrown that try to stop you from working toward a goal. I have learned that patience, faith, and determination go a long way in getting things <\/span>accomplished<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

6. What is your favorite project or a <\/span><\/b>memorable<\/span><\/b>\u00a0moment you\u2019ve had while working at CPE?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My favorite project is our\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Certified Nursing Assistant program<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>CPE was able to partner with Hamilton County School\/Howard High and Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation to build our first state accredited program. The program allows UTC to invest in the Chattanooga community by providing career pathways for citizens via partnerships with local employers. A four-year degree is not for everyone, so I look forward to offering people of all backgrounds the opportunity to better their lives through education and in-demand certification training.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

7. In one sentence, how would you define true leadership?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leadership is the ability to influence, inspire, and motivate others to strive\u00a0<\/span><\/span>toward<\/span><\/span> a common goal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

8. What is a professional motto or quote you \u201cwork\u201d by?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWhere there\u2019s a Will, there\u2019s a way.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

9. Why do you believe continuous education and training are important for individuals?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

There are many reasons continuous education is important. However, I think about how we never expected a worldwide pandemic to happen and completely shut down specific industries.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Because of continuous education, individuals who may have lost their job in 2020 are able to pursue\u00a0training programs. Then, they can get back on their feet more quickly and increase economic\u00a0<\/span><\/span>satiability<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for their families.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

10. List five adjectives that describe your personality.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ambitious. Determined. Passionate. Extroverted. Confident.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

11. What\u2019s a fun fact <\/span><\/b>about you that would surprise people?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I have red hair and blue eyes, which is one of the rarest combinations of hair and eye colors in the world. 1-2% of the world has red hair, and blue is the least common eye color for redheads. Bonus:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I\u2019m<\/span><\/span> also left-handed!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

12. What do you like to do when you <\/span><\/span>aren\u2019t<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the office?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

You can find me going to sporting events, exploring local shops and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>restaurants<\/span><\/span>, and working in my yard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

13. What sports teams do you cheer on the loudest?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chattanooga Football Club, UTC <\/span>Mocs<\/span>, Michigan Wolverines, and Tennessee Titans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

14. If you could be on any game show, what would it be and why?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Guy’s Grocery <\/span><\/span>Games, because<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I would love to meet Guy Fieri. Jeopardy is a close second.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

15. What is one food you <\/span><\/span>can\u2019t<\/span><\/span>\u00a0resist?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sushi.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

16. Are you a dog or cat person?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dog. I have a small, long-(red)haired Chiweenie named Charlie that I rescued. He has been with me since my undergraduate years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

17. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Super speed\u2014so my body could keep up with my mind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

18. What book is laying on your nightstand table?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

“A <\/span><\/span>Promised<\/span><\/span> Land” by President Barac<\/span><\/span>k<\/span><\/span> Obama.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

19. If you could meet one person, dead or alive, to grab coffee with, who would it be and why?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The late Anthony\u00a0<\/span>Bourdian<\/span>. He was a famous chef, author, and travel documentarian who starred in programs focusing on the exploration of international culture, cuisine, and the human condition. He once said, \u201c<\/span>People are generally proud of their food. A willingness to eat and drink with people without fear and prejudice\u2026they <\/span>open up<\/span>\u00a0to you in ways that somebody visiting who is driven by a story may not get.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Instead of eating at famous restaurants in Paris,\u00a0<\/span>Bourdian<\/span>\u00a0would\u00a0<\/span>sit in a<\/span> plastic\u00a0<\/span>chair enjoying street food in the Philippines or at the kitchen table of a multi-generation family <\/span>in Chile.\u00a0<\/span>Like\u00a0<\/span>sports, food can be the vehicle to break down barriers and bring people together who otherwise m<\/span>ight<\/span>\u00a0not have m<\/span>uch else in\u00a0<\/span>common. Barbecue might not be the answer to world peace, but <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0a start.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

20. What activities would you recommend to a tourist coming to visit Chattanooga<\/span><\/span>?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The perfect day:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Start with brunch at The Daily Ration, go on a hike and have a picnic on Signal or Lookout Mountains, enjoy an afternoon craft brew at Hutton & Smith Brewing Company, and finish the evening at a Chattanooga Football Club match.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
