Marah:\u00a0Why did you pursue the PMP certification?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Satish:\u00a0Years ago, I\u00a0created an individual development plan where I decided that\u00a0pursuing PMP\u00a0certification\u00a0was one of my career goals. I\u00a0knew that\u00a0what I learned through certification\u00a0would help give me a greater\u00a0understanding\u00a0and perspective of project management.\u00a0In my role,\u00a0I manage groups that work on smaller projects for our organization, and\u00a0then my team also partners\u00a0with our project management office\u00a0(PMO)\u00a0to work on bigger projects.\u00a0Certification has many personal benefits, but I was confident that it would also help me progress in my leadership role as well as be a better partner with our PMO.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: What did you enjoy about\u00a0UTC\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/b>PMP Exam Prep\u00a0course<\/span><\/b><\/a>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S: One thing I really enjoyed that I\u00a0would not\u00a0have received from\u00a0only self-studying was\u00a0meeting a variety\u00a0of people in the class. We\u00a0all had\u00a0different\u00a0project management\u00a0backgrounds, from IT to civil\u00a0building. The ability to network with\u00a0my classmates\u00a0and understand their motivations and experiences was\u00a0a great aspect of the course. We were also able to work together during group exercises, which I\u00a0found to be\u00a0useful.\u00a0Most importantly,\u00a0the course played a huge role in preparing me for\u00a0(and passing!)\u00a0the exam.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: What did you learn in the PMP course that has been particularly beneficial in your current role? <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S: The project management framework has helped me become a more strategic project manager. I am more of an asset to my team members because I know the right questions to ask to guide them into successful project implementation. Now I think of project management more holistically as I ask questions to make sure that we understand what we are trying to accomplish, the scope, the risk, and all the other aspects the framework teaches you. I am also more aware of making sure that the implementors of a project and our business partners have a mutual understanding of the project so we are all on the same page. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>What advice would you give to someone studying for the PMP? What are some study tips\/takeaways you implemented?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S: My first tip is to take a boot camp like the one I did at UTC.\u00a0A course helps you build\u00a0your foundational knowledge not only on the exam material but also\u00a0on\u00a0how to prep for the exam itself. All exams are different,\u00a0and you need to know what to be aware of and what the best study materials are.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, have dedicated study time for the exam. I know this can be challenging while working full-time, so I suggest setting a goal\u00a0for yourself at the beginning\u00a0of your study process\u00a0to keep yourself accountable. I found it helpful to have a dedicated place for studying as well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last, I discovered that practice exams were extremely helpful in preparing for the actual exam. I would sit in my designated study space and simulate the test day experience (for example, timing the exam). The practice exams helped me find areas for improvement and built confidence in my test-taking abilities. This advice is applicable to everyone, but as someone who speaks English as a second language, I felt like the practice exams helped me get really comfortable with the exam vocabulary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M: What was your work\/study\/life balance like while preparing for the exam?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S: While\u00a0that\u00a0time\u00a0was busy, I made sure to communicate with my family what I was doing and why I was doing it.\u00a0Once my family became aware that I had\u00a0designated\u00a0study time, my certification process\u00a0became\u00a0a family affair. My kids would ask, \u201cDad, did you pass your practice exam?\u201d Their questions motivated me because I want to be a good role model for my kids and show them that\u00a0hard work\u00a0pays off.\u00a0I found that sharing the experience with my family served as incredible motivation and accountability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M: Do you have anything else you would like to share about your PMP experience?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S: I have a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science and my MBA, and I would still say that the PMP is one of the most challenging exams I have taken throughout my career. That being said, it\u2019s also been one of the most rewarding experiences to accomplish earning PMP certification. Personally, I was fulfilled knowing I had met a goal I set for myself, and professionally, I knew that I was elevating my career. I would tell professionals to stay committed and go for their own PMP because the certification pays off!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
