One\u00a0in particular is\u00a0that\u00a0the certification\u00a0quantifies\u00a0competency. It shows a level of dedication to the profession and accumulation of best practices. \u00a0Placing those credentials behind your name show a level of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect that I have seen time and time again is that it gives individuals confidence, and that truly goes a long way. For example, some of our students have wanted to apply for HR positions they haven\u2019t worked in. They now have the training and confidence to look at that next level.<\/p>\n<p>What often happens in HR is we become so specialized in one area, for example recruitment, but with SHRM certification, you have competency in all facets. The credential is almost like introduction to all the other HR disciplines. Even if we work in recruitment, we must have a competency of areas such as compensation and employee relations\u2014because they all overlap.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE:\u00a0When you\u00a0received your SHRM\u00a0certification,\u00a0what did it do for you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">K<\/span>im: For me, the credentials made me more confident. When\u00a0I\u00a0applied\u00a0for jobs who recognized the credentials, I had an advantage. Employers often have individuals with similar backgrounds, but the credentials are able to show that higher level of expertise. The credentials really did help my career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: What value does\u202fthe SHRM Exam Prep have for an\u202findividual\u202fpreparing for his or her exam?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: The\u00a0course\u00a0is an important vital piece. The\u00a0exam covers such a vast body of information. With so much information, it can be daunting knowing where to start and how to break the content down.\u00a0Our SHRM\u00a0Exam Prep\u00a0program breaks it down for participants. We have a road map for them to follow that can lead to success.<\/p>\n<p>In the classroom, I try to accommodate different learning styles. With scenarios, quizzes, lectures, and group discussions, we are able to help each other learn the content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: What are some of the biggest struggles for people preparing for the SHRM Certification Exam?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42\" style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42\" style=\"text-align: right\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/center-professional-education\/files\/2019\/02\/19-shrm-article-tile.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/center-professional-education\/files\/2019\/02\/19-shrm-article-tile.jpg 176w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/center-professional-education\/files\/2019\/02\/19-shrm-article-tile-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CPE participants studying for their upcoming certification exam.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kim: It is so much material, and often times, people underestimate the importance of learning the content the SHRM way.\u00a0Industries practice components of HR differently, and I always tell students to wipe away their industry knowledge when\u00a0they\u00a0are testing. You need to know it the SHRM way. For some people, it is hard to let go of all their industry knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: How would you describe your teaching style? \u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: I try to bring the content to life through real life examples. I found that these examples make the content more meaningful\u00a0and\u00a0helpful. I often ask students to share their own experiences so they can learn from each other and see how their stories fit into the SHRM competencies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: What\u202fhave you enjoyed most about teaching this course?\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kim: I\u00a0truly enjoy working with\u00a0HR people, and I also get great satisfaction in knowing\u00a0that\u00a0I am preparing the next generation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: What are some of the 2019 SHRM Exam Prep course updates?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: One\u00a0new change\u00a0for participants is\u00a0the Online Learning System. They will have more opportunities to test, use flashcards, and practice. The new Online Learning System now provides more in-depth analytics for individuals to\u00a0really pinpoint\u00a0where they are struggling.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><u>Personal Professional Development Questions<\/u><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>CPE: Do you have a daily habit that you believe is a key towards a successful day?\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: I do, and it is\u00a0really important! I get up every day between 5:30 and 6:00.\u00a0I am very much a morning\u00a0person, and I do not come to work\u00a0until I have\u00a0had my morning\u00a0workout.\u00a0You cannot separate your brain and your body,\u00a0and if your body feels good,\u00a0you then perform better.\u00a0One day I missed a workout, and an\u00a0employee\u00a0noticed and\u00a0said \u201cKim, did you not work out this morning?\u201d I was obviously not in the best of moods.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another habit that I have is to spend the first fifteen minutes in the office outlining my to-dos.\u00a0I do monthly, weekly, and daily objectives.\u00a0I do not feel comfortable leaving the office until I have completed these assignments.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: Are there any tools you use to help you stay organized?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: I have tried lots of different tools. Some of them work better than others. I used the Franklin Planner for years. What I have learned is that I have to write tasks out in order to remember them. Sometimes, if\u00a0a\u00a0task\u00a0is\u00a0really important, I do not let it get out of sight. I\u2019ll have notes all over my office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: Is there a quote that you live by?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: I have a recent quote. \u201cLeaders should not create followers. Leaders should be creating other leaders.\u201d If I am not working to make my colleagues and employees the next leaders,\u00a0then I have failed them. My success, especially in HR, is dependent on the people I have around me, and I want to have individuals who are confident to lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: How do you stay up to date and\u202frelevant\u202fin your industry? \u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-43 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/center-professional-education\/files\/2019\/02\/SHRM_logo_2016_updatedv6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kim: There is\u00a0an enormous\u00a0volume of information coming\u00a0at\u00a0HR people, and the challenge is filtering it.\u00a0 Honestly,\u00a0I do not have time to read everything that is coming at me, so I use SHRM. I am a student of SHRM, and SHRM sends me an update at least three times a week. I make myself read or at least scan those updates\u2014following up as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>SHRM\u00a0also sends me Tennessee law changes.\u00a0The email newsletters\u00a0are an\u00a0easy way for me to organize all the information coming at me. If I need additional information, I can go out and research.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0also attend\u00a0local and national SHRM meetings, and I\u00a0am\u00a0lucky\u00a0to\u00a0have a great group of HR people I can pick up the phone and call.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CPE: What is the\u202fone\u202fpiece of advice you\u00a0would\u00a0give someone in their career journey?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kim: It is not enough to focus on being a good HR\u00a0practitioner.\u00a0You\u00a0must\u00a0also\u00a0see where\u00a0you can add the most value to\u00a0a\u00a0company.\u00a0You not only have to be the\u00a0expert in HR,\u00a0but also\u00a0be an expert\u00a0in your industry and your company.
