{"id":1237,"date":"2022-03-03T08:08:56","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T13:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/chancellor\/?post_type=utcblogs_newsletter&#038;p=1237"},"modified":"2022-03-03T08:08:56","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T13:08:56","slug":"chancellors-update-120","status":"publish","type":"utcblogs_newsletter","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/chancellor\/newsletters\/chancellors-update-120\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor&#8217;s Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The semester is flying by, with spring break coming up March 14-20. \u00a0Have a terrific spring break!\u00a0 When classes resume on Monday, March 21, there will only be five more weeks until Reading Day and final exams.<\/p>\n<p>March is Women\u2019s History Month, a time to celebrate women\u2019s contributions to history, culture and society. \u00a0Campus programming has already begun, with special events scheduled throughout the month\u2014including panel discussions, workshops, documentaries and a \u201cMarch Through History\u201d walking exhibit at Lupton Hall.\u00a0 You can <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/due-credit-womens-history-month-highlights-forgotten-contributions\/\">read here<\/a> about UTC Women\u2019s History Month events.<\/p>\n<p>We are fortunate to have many outstanding women student leaders motivating others to create positive change.\u00a0 The Inspiring Women in Lifelong Leadership Award (I WILL) recognizes UTC women students who \u201cshow exemplary leadership skills by incorporating social justice and gender equity in all they do.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mocsyncorgs.utc.edu\/submitter\/form\/start\/527341\">Recommendations for the I WILL Award<\/a> will be accepted through March 11.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s Scholarship Luncheon was highlighted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/frost-familys-generosity-will-benefit-utc-students-and-programs\/\">announcement of a generous gift<\/a> from the Frost Family Investment Fund supporting the Veterans Entrepreneurship Alumni Program, providing skills and funding for startup businesses in underserved areas, and creating undergraduate scholarships benefitting UTC students who are military veterans, currently engaged in ROTC or children of veterans or first responders.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the entire campus, I would like to thank the Frost Family for their generosity.\u00a0 The family has demonstrated its genuine belief in the work we do at UTC.\u00a0 It is so meaningful that they worked together to establish a gift supporting our students and programs.<\/p>\n<p>A big \u201cGO MOCS\u201d to our basketball and wrestling teams as they participate in their respective Southern Conference championships this weekend.\u00a0 The women\u2019s basketball team begins tournament play at 5:45 p.m. today against Furman.\u00a0 The men\u2019s team, the SoCon regular-season champs with a 14-4 conference record (24-7 overall), opens tournament play Saturday afternoon.\u00a0 The wrestling team, fresh off a recent Power-5 victory over Indiana University, participates in the SoCon Championships Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>For just the eighth time ever, a Mocs football player has been <a href=\"https:\/\/gomocs.com\/news\/2022\/2\/10\/football-strange-spring-continues-at-combine.aspx\">invited to the NFL Combine<\/a>, a prestigious event featuring talent evaluators from every NFL team.\u00a0 Offensive lineman Cole Strange is in Indianapolis through March 7, giving him a tremendous opportunity in his pursuit of a professional football career.\u00a0 Way to go, Cole!<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to softball pitcher Brooke Parrott on throwing a perfect game on February 19.\u00a0 Brooke retired all 21 Radford University batters she faced in recording just the fifth perfect game in Mocs history and the first since 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The Mocs men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross country teams were named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association <a href=\"https:\/\/gomocs.com\/news\/2022\/2\/8\/cross-country-track-field-cross-country-named-to-ustfccca-all-academic-teams.aspx\">All-Academic Teams<\/a>.\u00a0 The men posted a 3.687 team GPA during the fall semester to rank eighth in the nation.\u00a0 The women ranked 12th overall with a 3.802 GPA, and six of 16 team members recorded a perfect 4.0 in the fall.\u00a0 Go Mocs!<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to Trevor Elliott, UC Foundation associate professor of mechanical engineering, for being selected as a recipient of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/exceptional-engineering-educator\/\">2022 Society of Automotive Engineers\u2019 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award<\/a>.\u00a0 The international award recognizes exemplary teaching by younger engineering educators worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Gaudin, a UC Foundation professor in the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science, is part of a research team that recently <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/utc-professor-helps-id-2-million-year-old-bone\/\">found a fossil of a new species of animal<\/a> that lived approximately 2 million years ago. \u00a0The fossil comes from a species of pangolin\u2014or scaly armadillo\u2014that lived in Romania.\u00a0 The discovery is receiving international attention thanks to research published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/02724634.2021.1990075\">Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bloodanooga, a UTC campus semiannual blood drive coordinated by Blood Assurance, occurs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the University Center\u2019s Tennessee Room.\u00a0 The need for blood donations is at an all-time high, and this event is crucial to the blood supply in the Chattanooga area.\u00a0 Please take the opportunity to contribute, as each donation can save three lives.<\/p>\n<p>Recruitment of future UTC students is an essential function for everyone on campus.\u00a0 As the temperature warms up, we see more campus tours and parents walking around with their high school students.\u00a0 If you come across a student or a parent holding one of those iconic yellow bags, please be sure to say Hi and welcome them to UTC.\u00a0 We are all ambassadors of this University, and friendly actions go a long way.<\/p>\n<p>A little reminder: Daylight saving time takes effect at 2 a.m. next Sunday, March 13.\u00a0 Clocks and watches will need to spring ahead one hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The semester is flying by, with spring break coming up March 14-20. \u00a0Have a terrific spring break!\u00a0 When classes resume on Monday, March 21, there will only be five more weeks until Reading Day and final exams.
