Fall was here briefly, and we have returned to late summer weather.\u00a0 At least we have beautiful fall colors presenting themselves, and November is coming next week.\u00a0 Can fall be far behind?<\/p>\n

Wednesday night I attended Take Back the Night, a nationwide program that was sponsored on our campus by the Women\u2019s Center, Campus Activities Board and Know More (UTC\u2019s sexual misconduct, relationship violence and stalking prevention program).\u00a0 During the event I was struck by two thoughts: the bravery and strength of the individuals who shared their stories, and the need for all of us to be part of societal change to prevent sexual assault and relationship violence.\u00a0 I encourage all of you to think about ways you can help in this effort.\u00a0 All of us can make a difference by supporting our students, faculty, and staff and by taking on active roles in our community.<\/p>\n

Since joining UTC this past July as Director of the School of Education, Dr. Renee Murley has been strengthening our relationship with our local school system and working on a variety of projects that will help our education students be better prepared for a career in teaching. \u00a0UTC\u2019s education curriculum is being revised and enhanced, and the faculty are exploring ways to continue to support our graduates during their first three years as classroom teachers.\u00a0 We are also piloting a new mentorship program with the Hamilton County Department of Education, which pairs 21 education students with 21 of the county\u2019s most effective teachers, some of whom are UTC alums. \u00a0You can learn more about the mentorship program here.<\/a> \u00a0Last week Dr. Murley represented UTC in a panel discussion on teacher preparation and quality sponsored by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.<\/p>\n

We are excited to announce a new collaboration with Chattanooga State Community College. \u00a0We are promoting our Dual Admission program with a dual-branded advertising campaign. \u00a0The \u2018Start Here, Finish Here\u2019<\/em> campaign marks the first time the schools have worked together on a joint marketing effort. \u00a0Our Dual Admission program targets students seeking a more affordable way to obtain a four-year degree. \u00a0Participants take advantage of the Tennessee Promise and, after earning an associate\u2019s degree, receive guaranteed admission to UTC to earn a bachelor\u2019s degree. \u00a0Additional information about this program is available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mark your calendars! \u00a0The Mocs will open the 2017 College Football season with a nationally televised game against Jacksonville State. \u00a0This is ESPN\u2019s first televised college football game of the 2017 season, and no other schools have games scheduled that day. \u00a0It will take place at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama on August 26, 2017. \u00a0This is a wonderful opportunity for UTC to gain national visibility. \u00a0We hope to have a big group of UTC supporters at the game to cheer on the Mocs!<\/p>\n
