{"id":898,"date":"2020-03-20T16:51:31","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T20:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/chancellor\/?post_type=utcblogs_newsletter&#038;p=898"},"modified":"2020-03-20T16:51:31","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T20:51:31","slug":"novel-coronavirus-update","status":"publish","type":"utcblogs_newsletter","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/chancellor\/newsletters\/novel-coronavirus-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Novel Coronavirus Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beginning Monday, March 23, 2020, UTC courses will move to online delivery for the final four weeks of the semester.\u00a0\u00a0 Students and faculty are two-thirds of the way through an academic term, and we are all trying our best to support them as they complete the semester.\u00a0 The preparation to go 100% online has not been easy, but we can do this.\u00a0 I have spoken with creative, innovative faculty who are planning engaging online experiences for students.\u00a0 Faculty are helping each other, and campus resources like the Walker Center, Library, IT, and many more are in high gear providing support and guidance.\u00a0 Students are preparing to interact in new and different ways with their faculty.\u00a0 The most important thing we can do to ensure this online experience is a success is to engage in straight forward, solid communication on a continuing basis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Faculty, if you have not yet done so, I encourage you to reach out to your students as soon as possible.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am hearing from s<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudents <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that they are<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> anxious<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> about this move online.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students, be sure to check Canvas for each of your courses and reply as necessary to your instructor.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be sure to respond <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> questions <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as they <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> posted on Canvas<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The campus webpage &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/utc.edu\/coronavirus\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">utc.edu\/coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> &#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has links to helpful resources for both faculty and students as we move online.\u00a0 This page also has <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">updates and notices about th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> developing health crisis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I also want to provide an update on several other items that I am being asked about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S\/NC (Satisfactory\/No Credit) Grading Option. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is a petition from students to suspend all instruction and award students a S\/NC (Satisfactory\/No Credit) grade.\u00a0 Early in this crisis UTC made the decision to move online and finish the Spring Semester.\u00a0 We would like to provide students the option to select a S\/NC (Satisfactory\/No Credit) grading option.\u00a0 There are major concerns with the impact of such a decision.\u00a0 The Hope Scholarship requires coursework be taken for a grade; many graduate and professional schools require specific courses be taken for a letter grade, and certain major and general education requirements must be taken for a grade.\u00a0 Provost Hale will have an announcement about the S\/NC (Satisfactory\/No Credit) option no later than Wednesday, March 25<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Commencement Ceremony Options.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 We are working on options to acknowledge, celebrate, and honor students who will graduate this May.\u00a0 Graduating seniors and graduate students were sent a survey asking for input on options for commencement.\u00a0 The survey will be closed at 5PM on March 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 We have had a very strong response rate, and it is clear that students want to reschedule the May commencement ceremony.\u00a0 Information on the results of the survey and options for students will be forthcoming in the next 7-10 days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Housing, Parking and Meal Plan Refunds to Students.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 We are in the process of finalizing refund schedules, and information will go out to students next week.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Residence Hall<\/span><\/b> <b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Move-Out.\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Housing and Student Affairs will be assisting students in their move out of UTC residence halls in the days ahead.\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Much volunteer help is needed to assist students and their parents with this task.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Please contact Val Sample at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><a href=\"mailto:Valara-Sample@utc.edu\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Valara-Sample@utc.edu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">or 423-425-4304 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">if you are able to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">help <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">this effort.<\/span><span data-wac-het=\"2\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our campus is home to many international students, and they are caught far from home during this crisis.\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">We all need to do everything we can to help them feel comfortable.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Novel Coronavirus crisis is challenging and can at times seem overwhelming.\u00a0 I hope each of you have found your fellow faculty, staff, and students to be a source of inspiration \u2013 I know I have.\u00a0 The people who are UTC make this a special place, and I feel this even more during this crisis than ever before.\u00a0 We need to continue to keep each other informed and respect the incredible expertise and wisdom we have in every department, in every division, and in every person.\u00a0 I have never been more proud to be a MOC than today.\u00a0 Thank you for all you do.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beginning Monday, March 23, 2020, UTC courses will move to online delivery for the final four weeks of the semester.\u00a0\u00a0 Students and faculty are two-thirds of the way through an academic term, and we are all trying our best to support them as they complete the semester.\u00a0 The preparation to go 100% online has not&hellip;
