{"id":905,"date":"2020-04-02T10:16:42","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T14:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/chancellor\/?post_type=utcblogs_newsletter&#038;p=905"},"modified":"2020-04-02T10:18:16","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T14:18:16","slug":"chancellors-update-87","status":"publish","type":"utcblogs_newsletter","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/chancellor\/newsletters\/chancellors-update-87\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor&#8217;s Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we near the completion of a second week of online coursework, we are all adapting to this \u201cnew normal.\u201d\u00a0 Students, faculty and staff continue to adapt and adjust and find different ways to accomplish tasks every day. \u00a0We continue to focus on social distancing and meet virtually.\u00a0 I personally miss the face-to-face interaction but know we need to continue to protect each other while we get our work done.\u00a0 Keep up the great \u201cvirtual\u201d work!\u00a0 We will get through this together.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to thank and commend the UTC campus community for taking the necessary steps to help us through this trying period. \u00a0Everyone has risen to the challenge, and a couple of groups deserve a special shout out.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our custodial members have done yeoman\u2019s work in aggressively taking steps to ensure the UTC campus is clean and disinfected. They have been on the front line since Day 1, and they are unsung heroes. \u00a0Thank you so much for all that you do!<\/li>\n<li>The student affairs and housing staff did a terrific job of assisting more than 3,000 students who had to move out of on-campus residential housing. They were on the front line, helping our students.\u00a0 Great job!\u00a0 You made us all very proud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A reminder to the campus community: The Office of Student Outreach and Support is continually seeking donations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/student-outreach\/scrappys-cupboard\/help.php\">Scrappy\u2019s Cupboard<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/securelb.imodules.com\/s\/1341\/utc\/form\/19\/form.aspx?sid=1341&amp;gid=3&amp;pgid=4310&amp;cid=6419&amp;dids=3235&amp;src=shrturl\">Denise and Tim Downey Student Emergency Fund<\/a> (SEF).\u00a0 Scrappy\u2019s Cupboard food pantry is available for students experiencing food insecurity. Students may access Scrappy\u2019s Cupboard by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/student-outreach\/scrappys-cupboard\/use.php\">visiting their website<\/a>, calling (423) 425-2299 or by emailing <a href=\"mailto:sos@utc.edu\">sos@utc.edu<\/a>.\u00a0 Although available SEF funds are limited right now, students in need of emergency assistance should fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UTChattanooga&amp;layout_id=90\">SEF application<\/a>. Additional funding may become available in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>We have exciting news to share. \u00a0Senior Hannah Horton, a political science major and a member of the Innovation in Honors Program, has been selected as a J. William Fulbright U.S. Student Scholar to South Korea!\u00a0 Hannah will pursue a master\u2019s in Korean Studies in Seoul.\u00a0 Three others with UTC ties are semifinalists for a Fulbright Scholarship and will learn their status later this spring\u2014senior secondary education major Sara Baluch, graduate student Tiffany Herron and biology alumna Hannah Hightower.\u00a0 Moving forward through the National Screening Committee is a challenging and significant accomplishment. \u00a0UTC students interested in learning about the next Fulbright cohort should email <a href=\"mailto:national-scholarships@utc.edu\">national-scholarships@utc.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Juniors Tiffany Harvey and Ximena Leon, both biology majors and members of the Innovation in Honors Program, were offered admission to the highly competitive Amgen Scholars Program.\u00a0 Amgen Scholars are funded by the Amgen Foundation, an affiliate of an international biotechnology company that seeks to inspire the next generation of innovators. \u00a0Congratulations, Tiffany and Ximena!<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Dr. Cathie Smith, who was named a recipient of the 2020 American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Humanitarian Award. \u00a0What a tremendous honor!\u00a0 This award recognizes individuals who exemplify the compassionate nature of the physical therapy profession by actively expressing a commitment to humanity and exhibiting admirable degrees of selflessness in addressing key health concerns.\u00a0 Cathie, an associate professor and recognized expert in pediatric physical therapy\u2014particularly for her work in the neonatal intensive care unit\u2014has volunteered and served in multiple countries and our local community.<\/p>\n<p>Social distancing makes it hard to maintain a sense of community, especially for band students.\u00a0 The Department of Performing Arts Music Division is inviting student musicians from the Chattanooga community and around the world to participate in a virtual band ensemble.\u00a0 Please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/music\/events\/virtual-band.php\">their web page<\/a> to learn more.\u00a0 Submissions will be accepted through <u>Wednesday, April 15<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>For the most current information regarding COVID-19 and our campus, please check <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/coronavirus\/\">the UTC coronavirus website<\/a>. \u00a0To those with UTC ties fighting COVID-19 in the community and around the world, we are grateful for what you do. \u00a0Thank you!\u00a0 Stay safe!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we near the completion of a second week of online coursework, we are all adapting to this \u201cnew normal.\u201d\u00a0 Students, faculty and staff continue to adapt and adjust and find different ways to accomplish tasks every day. \u00a0We continue to focus on social distancing and meet virtually.\u00a0 I personally miss the face-to-face interaction but&hellip;
