National Hispanic Heritage Month runs through Oct. 15, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs has many events in store through collaborations with campus and community partners.\u00a0 Highlights include Screen on the Green movies at Chamberlain Field, Fiesta Fridays in the Multicultural Center\u2019s new Lupton Hall location, and a virtual Hispanic Heritage Networking Night. \u00a0For information, please visit MocSync<\/a> or email mcc@utc.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mark your calendars!\u00a0 ReSEARCH Dialogues, the largest academic conference on the UTC campus, will now be held virtually as part of the first-ever UTC Research and Creative Activities Week April 12-15.\u00a0 Information about the new format can be found on the ReSEARCH Dialogues<\/a> webpage.<\/p>\n

Congratulations to Dr. Mina Sartipi, director of the UTC Center for Urban Informatics and Progress (CUIP), on securing a $2.1 million grant from the Department of Energy\u2019s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE).\u00a0 In collaboration with Yu Liang, Osama Osman and Dalei Wu in the College of Engineering and Computer Science and Austin Harris in CUIP, they will examine ways to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.<\/p>\n

Assistant professor of sociology Chandra Ward and Dr. Sartipi are collaborating on projects with other universities.\u00a0 Grants of $2.1 million from the National Science Foundation and $1.8 million from the U.S. Department of Energy will support projects with the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA)\u2014in which regional transit systems will be reconceptualized using cutting-edge data science techniques.\u00a0 Great work!<\/p>\n

Congratulations to Michelle Deardorff, the Adolph S. Ochs professor of government and department head of Political Science and Public Service, on being elected vice president of the American Political Science Association.\u00a0 This is a tremendous honor for Michelle during a most interesting time for political scientists.<\/p>\n

In light of ongoing public health concerns regarding large gatherings, fall commencement ceremonies will be held virtually on Dec. 12.\u00a0 This was a difficult decision, but it is in the best interest of the campus community.<\/p>\n

This year is clearly one for the record books!\u00a0 This past Sunday we had a wild bear roaming around campus.\u00a0 What will happen next?<\/p>\n
