{"id":1003,"date":"2017-06-21T13:38:52","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T17:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/?p=1003"},"modified":"2017-06-21T14:00:06","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T18:00:06","slug":"dr-anthony-tony-skjellum-appointed-as-the-new-director-of-the-simcenter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/2017\/06\/21\/dr-anthony-tony-skjellum-appointed-as-the-new-director-of-the-simcenter\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Anthony (Tony) Skjellum Appointed as the New Director of the SimCenter"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1004\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1004\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/06\/skjellum-pic2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1004\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/06\/skjellum-pic2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Tony Skjellum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We are pleased to welcome, Dr. Tony Skjellum to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Skjellum, comes to us from Auburn University where he was the Lead Cyber Scientist and the Cyber Center director.\u00a0 He also led R&amp;D in High Performance Computing (HPC) and cyber at Auburn\u00a0University\u00a0in the college\u00a0of\u00a0engineering.\u00a0\u00a0Skjellum&#8217;s current research is a split between cyber\/Internet\u00a0of Things, and High Performance Computing and Exascale Storage.<\/p>\n<p>He received his BS, MS, and PhD Degrees from Caltech.\u00a0 His PhD work emphasized portable, parallel software for simulation, with a specific emphasis on message-passing systems. After graduating in 1990, he worked at Lawrence Livermore National Labs for 2.5 years as a computer scientist emphasizing performance-portable message passing and portable parallel math libraries.\u00a0 From 1993-2003, he was on faculty at Mississippi State\u00a0University, where he and his students co-developed MPICH with Argonne National Laboratory, the first implementation\u00a0of\u00a0the MPI-1 standard.\u00a0\u00a0Skjellum\u00a0was a leading participant in MPI-1 and MPI-2 standards as well, with specific contributions to the concepts\u00a0of\u00a0&#8220;groups contexts, and communicators,&#8221; which stemmed from his PhD research.\u00a0 From 2003-2013, he was professor and chair at the\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Alabama at Birmingham, Dept.\u00a0of\u00a0Computer and Information Sciences, where he continued work on high performance computing and cyber.<\/p>\n<p>Skjellum\u00a0has funding from DOE, NSF, and DOD.\u00a0 He is a senior member\u00a0of\u00a0ACM and IEEE, and Associate Member\u00a0of\u00a0the American Academy\u00a0of\u00a0Forensic Science (AAFS), Digital &amp; Multimedia Sciences Division.\u00a0 He remains active in the MPI Forum, and is co-chair\u00a0of\u00a0the OMG High Performance Embedded Working Group as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to welcome, Dr. Tony Skjellum to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
