Eighteen students had the opportunity to tour the local fulfillment center of e-commerce giant Amazon on February 4, 2016. Dr. Aldo McLean organized the tour as part of his Logistics Management and Value Engineering courses, and invited students in Engineering Management Design and Material Management to join as well.<\/p>\n

Serving as a more hands-on learning activity, the tour helps students tangibly relate the engineering and management skills they learn in class to a work environment.\u00a0 \u201cThe Amazon tour is a great example of a fusion between basic and complex logistics principles in one place,\u201d said Dr. McLean.\u00a0 \u201cYou can experience storage, order picking, material handling, order processing, receiving, shipping, optimization, and other operations on one tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to observing these operations, the tour allows students to ask detailed questions about processes like facility planning and work flow, as well as questions about internships and job opportunities after college.\u00a0 Specific questions asked by students regarded inventory allocation, drone logistics, and managerial processes.\u00a0 Students were most excited about seeing how \u201csuch a big company operates and functions,\u201d and how the \u201cmassive amount of inventory\u201d is handled.<\/p>\n

Opened in September 2011, the Chattanooga Amazon Fulfillment Center is one million square feet, has over 2,000 employees, and can house 20 million items or more at any given time.\u00a0 It\u2019s no surprise, then, that students were impressed by the scale and complexity of operations.\u00a0 When asked about the experience, students commented on the \u201corganization of people and products,\u201d the equipment used, and \u201chow smoothly things worked.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThe most memorable part,\u201d said Cole Gallagher, \u201cwas learning the entire process of how [the facility] operates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chattanooga\u2019s fulfillment center is the closest of six Amazon sites in the country that allow public tours.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s right in our backyard, and the tour coordinator at Amazon is fantastic and very helpful,\u201d said Dr. McLean.\u00a0 \u201cI continue to request and schedule tours for my students, colleagues, and other enthusiasts of logistics operations.\u00a0 Everyone I know is interested to see how the products they purchase online are processed and sent to them.\u00a0 It\u2019s like wondering where the electricity or water you use comes from.\u00a0 The Amazon tour fills a knowledge gap we have about some logistics operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the tour, Dr. McLean reviews Amazon\u2019s fulfillment logistics\u2014\u201cfrom their storage system to shipping and distribution structure\u201d\u2014in his Logistics Management course to make sure that students understand and can apply what they learned on the tour.\u00a0 \u201cI hope the experience makes a difference for them and for the firm some of them are working for,\u201d he said.\u00a0 Dr. McLean will continue to schedule tours to Amazon and other facilities that he feels can help enhance the information his students are learning in class.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
