The ninth annual undergraduate research conference provided opportunities for undergraduates to present their research focusing on the interface of biology and mathematics. NIMBioS provides a platform for innovative undergraduate students to showcase innovative work in areas combining computer science and statistical modeling with biological principles. Kathryn\u2019s research, under the direction of Associate Professor of Computer Science Dr. Hong Qin, addresses \u00a0the effects of dietary restrictions on lifespan and genotype-dependent models.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn \u201cKatie\u201d Rouse came to CECS as a transfer student from the University of Virginia, and has been a student leaders in the College from her first semester here. \u00a0In addition to her research with Dr. Qin, Katie is an active member of the Girls in Computer Science Chapter as well as the COMP UTC student organization.\u00a0 She serves as a member of the Dean\u2019s Student Advisory Council, and is the volunteer coordinator of the Colleges Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Program.\u00a0 As the Tutoring Program Coordinator, Katie recruits and schedules volunteers from each of the College\u2019s programs to tutor our students in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering courses.\u00a0 Her work with Student Success Director Julie David in assisting her fellow students reflects her commitment to helping others, and provides an opportunity for her to further her leadership skills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, Computer Science Senior Kathryn Rouse shared her research at the regional conference of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) held in Knoxville, TN.
