{"id":1482,"date":"2018-02-19T13:31:36","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T18:31:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/?p=1482"},"modified":"2019-06-20T14:44:08","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T18:44:08","slug":"baylor-school-students-and-cecs-faculty-explore-ways-to-eradicate-malaria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/2018\/02\/19\/baylor-school-students-and-cecs-faculty-explore-ways-to-eradicate-malaria\/","title":{"rendered":"Baylor School Students and CECS Faculty Explore Ways to Eradicate Malaria"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 324px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/12\/Baylor-6.jpg\" width=\"324\" height=\"255\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alex Butler and Chris Chen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UC Foundation Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Daniel Loveless and Dr. Zach Ruble Post-Doctoral Researcher in the College of Engineering and Computer Science have been \u00a0exploring ways to mitigate the devastation that malaria wreaks on Africa utilizing unmanned aviation vehicle (UAV) technology.<\/p>\n<p>Among other ideas, they\u2019ve been researching the use of drones to test water samples for the larvae of mosquitos, which carry malaria, and to distribute chemicals to kill the larvae.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Baylor School students, led by Dr. Mary Loveless, Director of the school\u2019s IdeaLab, built prototypes of devices that would attach to drones to carry out specific tasks. In December, the students came to UTC to present the seven prototypes they constructed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe simply provided them with desired specifications and operating constraints; the students had the freedom to tackle the problems using any approach they saw fit,\u201d \u00a0Dr. Daniel Loveless said. \u201cAll seven prototypes were demonstrated and functional. This is remarkable, especially given the short timeframe the students had to work. \u2026 They were clearly prepared and put in their best effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The College of Engineering and Computer Science actively seeks to expand its partnerships with area K-12 schools.\u00a0 The work of the Baylor School students in collaboration with the CECS faculty will be considered as the College\u2019s applied research using UAVs to combat malaria moves forward.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CECS &amp;
