UTC Places 5th in Sprint for Concrete Canoe a the ASCE Student Conference
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

UTC ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineering) Student team, which included Daniel Nolan, Caleb Casey, Caroline Meacham, Andy Lewis, Lindsay Brady, Mack Richardson, Clint Clayton, Seth Caudle, Matthew Shields, and Natalie Burdine, placed the 5th in the Concrete Canoe men\u2019s sprint race and the 9th in the Concrete Canoe women\u2019s sprint race (out of 20 schools) at the ASCE Southeast Student Conference at the University of Florida under the supervision of Dr. Ignatius Fomunung.\u00a0 The three day event took place in early March in Gainesville Florida.\u00a0 Out of 26 universities in the region, 20 schools from all around the Southeast and Puerto Rico attended the event with over 1200 students participating in a number of competitions.\u00a0 In addition to the sprint races the UTC participated, the event included a steel bridge competition, a professional paper competition, and creative civil engineering design challenges.<\/p>\n

UTC IEEE Robotics Team Won 5th Place at SouthEastCon<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The UTC IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Robotics Team participated at the IEEE SouthEastCOn in April and won the 5th<\/sup> place in the robotics hardware competition. The team members were Anthony Ferguson, William Garner, James Kyle Hale, Nicolas Mateo, Scott Rinehart, and Hannah Worley, under the supervision of Dr. Abdul Ofoli. The annual conference was held in St. Petersburg, Florida in April.\u00a0 The four-day conference provided educational opportunities to student participants through tutorial and technical sessions and exhibits.\u00a0 It also allowed students to interact with industry representatives and to learn from other college students studying in the Southeast region.\u00a0 Among many student-centered activities, the student career fair was the most popular activity among the participants.<\/p>\n

3rd place in Chem-E-Car<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana hosted the 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Southern Regional Conference (SRC) on 6-7, April. \u00a0The competition requires each team to generate energy using chemical reaction of materials to propel a mini-model car to a finish line without overshooting it.\u00a0 Our MOCS CHEM-E Car Team, made up of\u00a0co-captains Tyler Harp and Evan Patrick and members Katie Chase, Michael Coleman, Braulio Ferrando, PaTrisha Jacobs, Hannah Margavio, Nick Peck, Lisa Phan, Dalton Strike, and Dell Zimmerman placed the 3rd in the AIChE 2018 SRC Chem-E car competition\u00a0under the supervision of Dr. Bradley Harris. The car came within 47 cm of the finish line! Georgia Tech took 1st<\/sup> place, and UTK barely edged the UTC team for the second position out of the 17 teams competed in the event.\u00a0 The conference provided a venue for chemical engineering students and faculty from the South region to meet and participate in a variety of educational activities including competitions, workshops and social events.\u00a0 The UTC team moves on to represent UTC at nationals in Pittsburgh this Fall!<\/p>\n

CECS Students represent UTC at the 2018 American Society for Engineering Education SouthEast Section Annual Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n

CECS students Jamie Bowers, Morgan Young, Tyler Nichols, Mario Manzo and\u00a0 Arts & Sciences student, Amanda Booker, under the supervision of Dr. Cecelia Wigal, received the Freshman\/Sophomore Design Team Division 1st Place Award at the 2018 ASEE SE Section Annual Conference at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL, March 3-6, 2018.\u00a0 The conference consisted of technical sessions, poster sessions, and workshops.\u00a0 Using the conference theme of \u201cEducating the Engineer of the Future,\u201d the conference promoted discussion and sharing of best practices and effective engineering education methodologies. Also attending the conference was Electrical engineering student Simar Singh, advised by Dr. Daniel Loveless, who was awarded the 2nd Place in the Undergraduate Researcher Poster Competition (Junior and Senior levels) for his work, entitled \u201cThe Response of Fuzzy Electronics to Ionizing Radiation.\u201d\u00a0 CECS students Mark Sharrar and Cody O\u2019Laughlin also presented at the conference as did Dr. Charles Margraves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
