Eltom, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Electrical Engineering, is our featured faculty member for November\u2019s \u201cGetting To Know You\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to living in Chattanooga, Dr. Eltom has lived in Potsdam NY, Doha Qatar, Riyadh Saudi Arabia, and Khartoum Sudan.  He speaks both English and Arabic.  His family consists of Shadia Ali (wife), Mohamed (son), and Rania (daughter).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2020\/11\/soccer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"138\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2185\" \/>Dr. Eltom enjoys playing and watching soccer.  His hobbies? \u201cGardening, hiking and rowing\u201d he tells us.  He also enjoys rafting, walking and participating in webinars.<\/p>\n<p>Having started at CECS in August of 1984, Dr. Eltom has certainly seen some changes over the years.  Topping the chart of changes are creation of departments and moving from teaching to teaching &amp; research.  His favorite thing about his career?  \u201cTeaching students \u2013 Using my knowledge and experience to help others\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When asked what his proudest accomplishment was, Dr. Eltom replied \u201cI would call it self-satisfying.\u201d  He listed the following:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022\t\u201cThe success of the EE department (Academic reputation, enrollment, research, faculty, and outreach). This is compared to where the department was in 2008\/9.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022\t\u201cContributions to Chattanooga in helping and guiding refugees, helping in developing soccer programs, and contributing to professional societies.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022\t\u201cI am also happy with the Non-Profit work in the field of education I have been doing overseas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is Dr. Eltom most grateful for today? \u201cI am grateful that my family and I are healthy and I have a hand to lend to those in need\u201d.  We asked Dr. Eltom for the best piece of professional advice he\u2019s ever received or given:  \u201cDo not give up.  Respect others.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Eltom wanted to be an Engineer when he was small.  We\u2019re glad he pursued that career and continues to share his knowledge and experience with us at CECS.
