Many of these people I myself had not seen for decades. We visited several other places in our weeks in Europe, including France and Belgium, but the week we spent with our family was the most incredible part. Vera left the experience transformed. They now have two new favorite foods (octopus and flan) and has been greatly humbled by realizing the world is much larger than they thought it to be. They also have become good friends with their cousin, despite the language barrier. I am so happy we had this bonding experience together! <br><em>Irene J. Hillman<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been to a lot of places in the U.S. and in other countries, but what sticks in my mind is seeing Mount Rushmore in South Dakota in person.\u00a0 I\u2019d seen it on tv or in a movie, but wow \u2013 the in-person experience is spectacular.\u00a0 Over the fourteen-year period of carving, 1927-1941, almost 400 workers both men and women worked on it.\u00a0 Pretty impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2023\/09\/trip02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2023\/09\/trip02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2023\/09\/trip02.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2023\/09\/trip02-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2023\/09\/trip02-610x343.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan.\u00a0 I stayed in Asakusa in Tokyo on my own for 4 days and soaked in the culture.\u00a0 The people are beyond polite and respectful of your space.\u00a0 One day I was eating with chopsticks and thought I was managing it well, but the elderly woman at a nearby table gave me impromptu tips on what to do better.\u00a0 She was delightful and added to my great experience.\u00a0 The food, the smells, the parks, the street shopping\u2026 and the trains are so clean and quiet!\u00a0 <br><em>Teresa Phillips<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Food For Thought Each month in the Dean\u2019s Message we\u2019ll ask for your suggestions on places to go, books to read, tv shows to watch, delicious recipes and more.\u00a0 \u00a0Responses will be published in this blog the following month.\u00a0 There will be a random drawing from participants who submit a response for a sweet surprise&hellip;
