Weiyang “Ryan” Lin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I\u00a0was born in Zhejiang, China, to parents,\u00a0<\/span>Zhenxiong<\/span>\u00a0Lin and\u00a0<\/span>Yuqian<\/span>\u00a0Huang.\u00a0I was\u00a0the\u00a0youngest\u00a0of five children, after four\u00a0older sisters.\u00a0As a teenager I had broad interests in mathematics,\u00a0science,\u00a0literature, and basketball.\u00a0In college,\u00a0I narrowed my interests to mathematics and chose the major of\u00a0Information and Computing Science.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>There\u00a0I was\u00a0exposed to interdisciplinary studies of applied mathematics, computer science and statistics.\u00a0There\u00a0I\u00a0also\u00a0met Chao\u00a0\u201cJessica\u201d\u00a0Wu, who became my wife later in 2012, after two years and seven months of\u00a0cross-Pacific\u00a0relationship while I pursued graduate study at UTC.\u00a0I\u00a0completed a\u00a0Master of Science\u00a0degree in Computational Engineering in 2013,\u00a0and Ph.D. in the same field in the fall of 2016,\u00a0and\u00a0have\u00a0a\u00a0beloved\u00a0son Joseph Lin who is turning 17<\/span>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>months\u00a0old in December.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What brought you to UTC?<\/strong>
\nThe Computational Engineering graduate program offered\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0UTC\u00a0SimCenter\u00a0has been famous for\u00a0research on Computational Fluid Dynamics and other physics-based simulations, and we were on the same page regarding the philosophy of utilizing computers to solve\u00a0real-world problems.\u00a0When I applied, Dr. Timothy Swafford and I had\u00a0long\u00a0email conversations, which convinced me to join the SimCenter\u00a0family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your educational background?<\/strong>
\nI have a Bachelor of Science in\u00a0Information and Computing Science. It\u00a0is\u00a0an interdisciplinary field which includes\u00a0applied mathematics, computer science and statistics\u00a0and offers\u00a0core courses\u00a0in\u00a0Mathematical\u00a0Modeling,\u00a0Numerical\u00a0Linear Algebra, Statistics, Object Oriented Analysis, Software Engineering, and more.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What research are you working on?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I enjoy learning and developing algorithms, as well as practical\u00a0software\u00a0for solving complex problems.\u00a0I am convinced that better software leads to better research.<\/p>\n

During the graduate level classes I took at the SimCenter, I developed Euler and Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes flow solvers and grid generation\u00a0codes, and parallel linear solvers\u00a0for shared and distributed memory\u00a0machines.<\/p>\n

My\u00a0doctoral\u00a0research topic is the simulation and design of acoustic metamaterials\u00a0and phononic crystals.\u00a0In the high-order methods group,\u00a0I developed a finite element time domain simulation software for multi-material acoustic wave propagation problems,\u00a0with the capability of parallel\u00a0computing using MPI and OpenMP. The\u00a0adjoint-based sensitivity analysis\u00a0is implemented\u00a0for topology and shape optimizations. The design optimization techniques can be used to produce arbitrary shapes\u00a0based on user-defined demands with minimal\u00a0requirements of\u00a0knowledge about the actual mechanism as a\u00a0prerequisite.<\/p>\n

What are your plans for the future?<\/strong>
\nI am going to work\u00a0in an R&D group\u00a0in industry to gain some real-world experience, with the hope of better understanding simulation needs. It is difficult to tell the future, but I think I would enjoy both academia and industry. In fact, some former SimCenter faculty went back to universities after serving\u00a0in\u00a0industry for years, but some\u00a0returned\u00a0to industry again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are your interests and hobbies?<\/strong>
\nI like\u00a0thinking things through and getting things\u00a0to\u00a0work. I also like playing ball games, board games and video games with friends, but\u00a0I cannot justify much time for\u00a0those\u00a0since family is\u00a0my\u00a0priority at this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does your experience at UTC meet or exceed your expectations?<\/strong>
\nThe graduate program was a surprise for me in the beginning. I had to take an advanced class to develop a three-dimensional flow solver on meshes with hybrid elements, only because there was no other class to take\u00a0in that semester. I survived the class,\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0became a valuable experience for me since I became\u00a0more comfortable\u00a0with\u00a0developing codes for complex problems. As faculty at the SimCenter often say, you learn things\u00a0through\u00a0implementation. This is a good philosophy:\u00a0a successful implementation does not only bring you confidence in understanding, but also\u00a0stimulates\u00a0further interest\u00a0in\u00a0the research you are working on.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
