Ryan Davis, co-founder of Reliance Human Capital Management, visited Dr. Aldo McLean\u2019s ETEM 1000 Engineering Management Seminar class on October 7, 2016, to talk about starting and growing his business.<\/p>\n

After briefly tracing his story from college to the founding of his company\u2014including a stint working at a coffee shop and the decision to give up a 60K salary to pursue a career more suited to his skill set for half the pay\u2014Davis offered the class \u201cseven swing thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. No second-guessing<\/em>. \u201cLearn to cut off a bad thing,\u201d said Davis, \u201cno matter what it is.\u201d Whether a job or a relationship, staying in a bad situation won\u2019t do you any favors, he said.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Have a positive view of yourself and others<\/em>. Davis doesn\u2019t ask for r\u00e9sum\u00e9s when interviewing people, he said. \u201cI just want to know if you\u2019re a positive person, because we can do a lot with that.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Write down your goals<\/em>. \u201cDon\u2019t leave it to chance, don\u2019t change them constantly, and don\u2019t make them too lofty or vague.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. You are whom you hang out with<\/em>. \u201cThe people you surround yourself with,\u201d said Davis, \u201care exactly whom you will be like. It\u2019s important to surround yourself with people who build you up, and important to know when someone is pulling you back.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          1. Get 5\u201310 centers of influence<\/em>. A lot of Davis\u2019s success has come from knowing the right people, he said. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to get to know somebody just because they\u2019re the right person. That person is going to respect that. If you have a career field that you know you want to be in, go find the top person in that field and say \u2018I want to know you.\u2019 I guarantee you that 99% of your competition is not doing that.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            1. Get disciplined with exercise and diet<\/em>. \u201cYou\u2019ll feel better\u201d\u2014no further explanation needed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                \n
              1. Have 10 seconds of guts<\/em>. \u201cSometimes you just need to go for it,\u201d Davis said.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                After offering these pointers, Davis opened up the floor for questions and discussion. The conversation focused on details of Davis\u2019s business: How does it work? What\u2019s the hardest part of running the business? How do you attract and choose investors? Are you hiring and what would you look for in new hires? Etc. The class seemed particularly inspired by Davis\u2019s experience, success (and the roundabout path it took to get there), and advice\u2014perhaps because Davis is not much older than many of the students he was speaking to.<\/p>\n

                Davis credits his success to his life experiences. \u201cLifetime learning is the best,\u201d he said. Reemphasizing this thought, Dr. McLean concluded the class by saying, \u201cIt\u2019s not only coming here, sitting down, getting your exam done. It\u2019s networking, seeing what is out there, trying to be engaged from day one. And then, when you\u2019re done with school, it\u2019s calling people directly rather than sending out r\u00e9sum\u00e9s.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
