With the support of his research advisor, <strong>Dr. Bradley Harris<\/strong>, Boeger shared his work entitled, \u201cStudying Vibrio Cholerae Adaptations to Improve Cholera Prevention.\u201d \u00a0UC Foundation Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department <strong>Dr. Cecelia Wigal<\/strong> brought home both first place honors in the Health Division of the Faculty Elevator Speech Competition <u>and<\/u> the overall Grand Prize in that division for her presentation entitled, \u201cCommunicating for Independence.\u201d\u00a0 The continued research activities by Boeger and Wigal will be supported by funding and, in Dr. Wigal\u2019s case, the hiring of a part-time graduate assistant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. Wigal\u2019s work in engineering design and her heart for discovering innovations and adaptations to assist persons who face developmental learning \u00a0and\/or physical challenges have been the foci of her research for several years. These research areas have also become integral parts of the College\u2019s design courses, commitment to community outreach, and the annual Design and Research Showcase.\u00a0 During the spring semester, the collaborative work of our students and faculty in engineering design with not-for- profits in \u00a0the community, including Signal Centers, Soddy and Spring Creek Elementary Schools, and the Tri-State Therapeutic Riding Center, resulted in over thirty new adaptive products including an oversized light board, stationary rocking chair, \u00a0wheel chair busy board, and adapted art desk and table for use by special needs students including those with autism and cerebral palsy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16956\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16956\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16956 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/04\/C9nqHYjW0AA0jSE-300x225.jpg?x81451\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Art student Ashley Smith designed a simple prototype called a \u201cMouthstick Tool\u201d for artists who can\u2019t use their hands.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/artforall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-775\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/artforall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a>Art for All was a new UTC initiative combining two subjects \u2013 Engineering and Art &#8211; \u00a0which are not always the first to come to mind when pondering potential collaborations. When these two areas, key to the human experience, team up to help disabled children and adults to express themselves, a bit of \u201cmagic\u201d happens. In the Art for All project CECS engineering students designed devices to help people with disabilities create their artwork. At the same time, art students helped the artists figure out how to take what was in their heads and bring it into the real world.\u00a0 Dr. Wigal led the College\u2019s efforts, and noted that, \u201cthe art and engineering students came together to brainstorm solutions and to understand the tools and materials needed for persons with disabilities to take was in their heads and bring it into the real world.\u201d\u00a0 In assisting artists with physical and mental disabilities, some with limited use of their arms and heads, the students were called upon to look anew at the realities and problems that many of those around us face in their everyday lives.\u00a0 The CECS students had seven weeks to design and create the adaptive devices, and to meet with the artists to test the effectiveness of their designs.\u00a0 The \u201cmagic\u201d happened &#8211; \u00a0visual art by those who have never before had the opportunity to create works of art. \u00a0Looking ahead to future experiential learning opportunities for our students to collaborate with others in meeting real world problems, Dr. Wigal said, \u201cwe hope to add projects that will help individuals participate in the performing arts.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">In addition to Reed Boeger and Dr. Wigal, the \u201cwinners\u201d in these efforts are the community partners and the persons whose lives are enriched via the applied research of the students and faculty of CECS.\u00a0 Their hard work in fulfillment of the College\u2019s commitment to community service is greatly appreciated by all.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"880\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QLgdQXNhqaA?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"880\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iD8UBQ9r1kM?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chemical Engineering sophomore Reed Boeger took first place in the Lightning Round Presentation Competition in UTC\u2019s Second Annual ReSEARCH Dialogues.\u00a0 The highly successful two-day long event held in April highlighted the research initiatives of the University\u2019s students and faculty, showcasing the scholarship and creative accomplishments of over 300 participants.
