From cybersecurity research to robotics, from studying the prevention of cholera transmission to designing and constructing \u00a0mini-Baja and chemical reaction powered cars, and more\u2026. our students and faculty have accomplished much in the last three months \u2013 just take a \u201cread\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/kizza-book.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-804 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/kizza-book-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/kizza-book-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/kizza-book-133x200.jpg 133w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/kizza-book-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/kizza-book.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/><\/a>Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Head of that Department, <strong>Dr. Joseph Kizza<\/strong>, is\u00a0 the author of the fourth edition of\u00a0 <i>Guide to Computer Network Security <\/i>released this month by Springer Press. The College\u2019s faculty continues to focus research and instruction on the critical fields of network and cybersecurity. UTC is one of sixty-nine (69) CyberCorps institutions in the nation.\u00a0 The \u00a0UTC CyberCorps team consists of Dr. Kizza, <strong>Dr. Neslihan Alp<\/strong>, <strong>Prof. Kathy Winter<\/strong>, <strong>Dr. Karen Adsi<\/strong>t, and <strong>Dr. Dalei Wu<\/strong>.\u00a0 The CECS also partners with Tuskegee University which helps to increase underrepresented, trained individuals in\u00a0the program.\u00a0 UTC InfoSec center Defense housed in the College of Engineering and Computer Science is a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance and Cybersystems designated by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and National Security Agency (NSA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-858\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/2017ieee-robotics-team-500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-858\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/2017ieee-robotics-team-500-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/2017ieee-robotics-team-500-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/2017ieee-robotics-team-500-177x200.jpg 177w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/2017ieee-robotics-team-500-355x400.jpg 355w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/2017ieee-robotics-team-500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bottom (L to R): Kimber Scroggins, Ciera Rogers, Brandon Case<br \/>Top (L to R): Brent Woods, Jason McDowell (CECSTech Staff traveling in Dr. Elliott\u2019s place), Ayman Aldashet, and Brain Rollins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>UTC IEEE Robotics Team<\/strong> developed a competition-ready robot as part of the College\u2019s Interdisciplinary Design Course.\u00a0 Under the mentorship of <strong>Dr. Abdul Ofoli<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, and <strong>Dr. Trevor Elliott<\/strong>, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, the team consisted of majors in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.\u00a0 In regional competition held in Charlotte, NC, the team placed 19<sup>th<\/sup> out of 42 university entries, and finished with a higher ranking than the University of Florida , Duke University, and several larger engineering programs.\u00a0 With a Star Wars theme driving its design, the MOCs Robot successfully traversed a course with included deciphering a code represented by several discrete components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-979\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/rube-goldbert-team.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-979\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/rube-goldbert-team-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/rube-goldbert-team-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/rube-goldbert-team-580x323.jpg 580w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/rube-goldbert-team.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/engineering-computer-science\/files\/2017\/05\/rube-goldbert-team-250x139.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team leader Dr. Charles Margraves with the 2017 Rube Goldberg Team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An interdisciplinary design team consisting of senior mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering students; <strong>Andrea Borges<\/strong>, <strong>Jacob Boyd<\/strong>, <strong>Autumn McCarroll<\/strong>, <strong>Mitchell Schroll<\/strong>, <strong>Scott Simmons<\/strong>, and <strong>Cory Smith<\/strong>; mentored by Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering <strong>Dr. Charles \u201cChuck\u201d Margrave<\/strong>s took second place in the online division of the national <strong>Rube Goldberg Competition<\/strong>.\u00a0 This annual engineering competition requires machine design focused on a particular problem with unique features and steps. The 2017 UTC machine was based on the iconic Looney-Tunes\u00a9 universe, complete with each team member\u2019s adoption of a Looney Tunes persona! The main focus was to successfully apply a \u201cband-aid\u201d to \u00a0a mountain set amidst a peaceful ski resort and forest. The band-aid application was prompted by the reality that the mountain is in fact a volcano prompting resort residents to launch into action prevent the destruction of their village.
