{"id":42,"date":"2021-04-08T15:53:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T19:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/erika-schafer\/?page_id=42"},"modified":"2024-12-12T21:41:22","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T02:41:22","slug":"trumpet-pedagogy-for-all-ages-and-abilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/erika-schafer\/trumpet-pedagogy-for-all-ages-and-abilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Trumpet Pedagogy for All Ages and Abilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do you play the trumpet?\u00a0 Sound is produced on the trumpet when the player energizes the air molecules already in the trumpet by blowing into the trumpet with the intention of making a sound.\u00a0 The energy traveling in the air sets the air molecules already inside the trumpet in motion. They \u201creflect\u201d of the atmospheric air at the bell, and a standing wave is created in the trumpet (concept borrowed from John Harbaugh, \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MVs2G60-ilo&amp;t=466s\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MVs2G60-ilo&amp;t=466s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MVs2G60-ilo&amp;t=466s\">)<\/a>.\u00a0 The lips sympathetically vibrate with this standing wave in the trumpet, creating a tone.\u00a0 The lips will naturally come together when air is blown through the trumpet (Bernoulli effect).\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therefore, the enrgy in the air and the ear plays the trumpet.\u00a0 You do not need to buzz your lips.\u00a0 In fact, doing so will cause problems.\u00a0 I discourage lip and mouthpiece buzzing for this reason.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathe as naturally as possible.\u00a0 Lay down and observe how you breathe in this position.\u00a0 The abdomen should rise on the inbreath and fall on the outbreath.\u00a0 When standing, the gut should relax on the inbreath, and the chest should rise and expand on the outbreath.\u00a0 Then, let the music teach the body how to breathe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not need to use a lot of air to play the trumpet.\u00a0 Too much air will cause problems.\u00a0 You need just enough to touch and vibrate the air already in the trumpet.\u00a0 This is very little.\u00a0 You do however need air that moves.\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut normal drinking straws to about 6 inches in length.\u00a0 Students can practice blowing through an open straw. If they block the open end of the straw by closing it off with their finger, they can produce a pitch\/tone by blowing into the straw.\u00a0 This is akin to producing sound on the trumpet. You should not feel the air coming back towards you.\u00a0 If you do, you may be using too much air. Transfer this feeling and sound of resonating the pipe to trumpet playing (exercise could be misunderstood in writing, better to demonstrate in person; exercise borrowed from MWNA program designed to retrain brass players:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/musicianswellness.com\/\">https:\/\/musicianswellness.com\/<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/musicianswellness.com\/\">)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The teacher should encourage the student to focus on feeling the air travel freely through the pipe and hearing how they want to sound.\u00a0 This external focus of attention will be a far more successful method of motor skill development than teaching the specific motor skills themselves (based on research by Gabriele Wulf, <a href=\"http:\/\/gwulf.faculty.unlv.edu\/\">http:\/\/gwulf.faculty.unlv.edu\/<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/gwulf.faculty.unlv.edu\/\">)<\/a>. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The teacher can however correct bad physical habits that present in their students.\u00a0 Otherwise, teach by having the student envision the sound they want.\u00a0 While demonstrating is helpful, description, recordings, and the student\u2019s imagination are just as helpful.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many trumpet playing struggles can be addressed focusing on the above concepts.\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Concepts borrowed from MWNA program designed to retrain brass players:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/musicianswellness.com\/\">https:\/\/musicianswellness.com\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Concepts borrowed from MWNA program designed to retrain brass players:&nbsp;&nbsp;https:\/\/musicianswellness.com\/.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":271,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"class_list":{"0":"post-42","1":"page","2":"type-page","3":"status-publish","5":"entry"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.5 -
