Here’s what these senior history majors shared and how they responded to the following questions:
What should students know and do to succeed in their history degrees?
- Read, and then keep reading
- Engage your professors — take notes in class, listen to what they say, go to office hours
- Get involved — take part in extra-curricular activities
- Utilize the library
- Manage your work and your time — learn when to skim and when to read in-depth, cite your sources as you go, take advantage of opportunities to practice public speaking
- Enjoy what you learn, and remember why you became a history major in the first place — make connections between subjects, take classes outside your comfort zone
How has studying history affected the way you engage with the world?
- It means being a little nicer and caring more, especially for those who haven’t had the privilege of studying history
- It helps you see nuance, understand what others are saying, see how history influences the modern world
- It teaches you to learn from past mistakes
What would you say to someone who’s unsure about majoring in history and is worried about finding a job after graduation?
- You don’t have to be a teacher or starve; there are many things you can do
- If it’s your passion, do it, otherwise you won’t be happy
- You’ll be able to find a job with what you learn, especially with skills like writing and critical thinking
- It’s about self-promotion, knowing that you can get the same jobs that business majors get
