It teaches critical thinking, something America needs plenty more of"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #999999\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-grossman-history-major-in-decline-20160525-snap-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>: &#8220;History isn&#8217;t a &#8216;useless&#8217; major&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>A few key quotes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the long run, &#8230; <strong>graduates in history and other humanities disciplines do well financially<\/strong>. &#8230;\u00a0After 15 years, [] philosophy majors have more lucrative careers than college graduates with business degrees. History majors\u2019 mid-career salaries are on par with those holding\u00a0business bachelor&#8217;s degrees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The utility of disciplines that prepare critical thinkers escapes personnel offices, pundits and\u00a0\u00a0politicians\u00a0(some of whom perhaps would prefer that colleges graduate more followers and fewer leaders). But it shouldn\u2019t. Labor markets in the United States and other countries are unstable and unpredictable. In this environment \u2014 especially given the expectation of career changes \u2014 <strong>the most useful degrees are those that can open multiple doors, and those that prepare one to learn rather than do some specific thing<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>History students, in particular<\/strong>, sift through substantial amounts of information, organize it, and make sense of it. In the process they <strong>learn how to infer what drives and motivates human behavior<\/strong> from elections to social movements to board rooms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employers interested in recruiting future managers should understand (and many do) that <strong>historical thinking prepares one for leadership because history is about change \u2014 envisioning it, planning for it, making it last<\/strong>. In an election season we are reminded regularly that success often goes to whoever can articulate the most compelling narrative. History majors learn to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything has a history.
