Africana Studies Funds Travel Grants for Faculty<\/h3>\n

The Africana Studies program, with support from the College of Arts and Sciences, invites full-time faculty to apply for an Africana Studies Faculty Travel Grant.\u00a0 Successful applications are funded up to $500 for conference, research, or creative activity travel relating to Africana Studies topics.\u00a0 UTC\u2019s Africana Studies program promotes interdisciplinary perspectives on African, African American, and Afro-Latin American history, culture, literature, and politics from the historical beginnings to the present day.\u00a0 For more on the grants click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s Africana Studies Travel Grant funded three research proposals in fields across the College of Arts and Sciences. \u00a0Recipient English faculty member Dr. Hannah Wakefield<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0proposal, \u201cThe Black Church and African American Literature,\u201d\u00a0funded a research trip to New York City\u2019s Schomburg Center.\u00a0 Her book project examines Alexander Crummell\u2019s uneven relationship with the Protestant Episcopal Church.\u00a0 Archeologist Dr. Lindsay Cochran\u2019s proposal, \u201cFinding New Orleans: An Archaeological Survey to Locate an Elusive\u00a0Antebellum Cemetery,\u201d funded student research on\u00a0Gullah-Geechee communities.\u00a0\u00a0History faculty member Dr. Julia Cummiskey<\/a>\u2019s grant proposal funded conference travel to the World History Association Meeting\u00a0in San Juan, Puerto Rico where she presented\u00a0research from her book manuscript, \u201cPlacing Global Health in Africa: Virus Research in Uganda, 1936-2000.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upcoming Africana Studies Events<\/h3>\n

Bridge Refugee Service<\/a> client Hemedi, a Congolese refugee who was resettled in Knoxville, and volunteer Brian Notess, an executive producer for video production at the University of Tennessee, screen their film \u201cCongolese<\/a>,\u201d about a Congolese boy who meets an American girl shortly after he has moved to the United States, at the Knoxville Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 2:00.<\/p>\n

Screening of the documentary Agents of Change<\/em><\/a> on Thursday, September 26, 2019\u00a0<\/em>as part of the 50th<\/sup> anniversary of black studies programs in the United States<\/p>\n

Day-trip to the Legacy Museum<\/a> in Montgomery on Saturday, October 26, 2019.
