{"id":125,"date":"2016-07-01T16:43:49","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T20:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/?p=125"},"modified":"2025-05-22T07:14:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T11:14:36","slug":"more-reasons-to-study-history-why-americas-business-majors-are-in-desperate-need-of-a-liberal-arts-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/2016\/07\/01\/more-reasons-to-study-history-why-americas-business-majors-are-in-desperate-need-of-a-liberal-arts-education\/","title":{"rendered":"More reasons to study history: &#8220;Why America&#8217;s Business Majors Are in Desperate Need of a Liberal-Arts Education&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #999999\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>More reasons to study history<\/strong>, this time from\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2016\/06\/why-americas-business-majors-are-in-desperate-need-of-a-liberal-arts-education\/489209\/?utm_source=atlfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Atlantic<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Some key passages:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>[W]hen businesses go hunting for CEOs or managers<\/strong>, \u201c<strong>they will say<\/strong>, a couple of decades out, that <strong>I\u2019m looking for a liberal arts grad<\/strong>,\u201d said Judy Samuelson, executive director of the Aspen Institute\u2019s Business and Society Program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>[T]o succeed in the long term, [students will]\u00a0require an education that allows them to grow, adapt, and contribute as citizens\u2014and to build successful careers<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Put simply, business majors seem to be graduating with some of the technical skills they\u2019ll need to secure jobs, but without having made the gains in writing or critical-thinking skills they\u2019ll require to succeed over the course of their careers, or to adapt as their technical skills become outdated and the nature of the opportunities they have shifts over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A 2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/cae.org\/images\/uploads\/pdf\/Majors_Matter_Differential_Performance_on_a_Test_of_General_College_Outcomes.pdf\">study<\/a> of the Collegiate Learning Assessment test\u2014administered to some 13,000 undergraduates as they entered and exited university\u2014found that <strong>business, health, and education majors substantially underperformed students in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and engineering<\/strong> &#8230; in writing, complex reasoning, and critical thinking by the time they\u2019d graduated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Those are the weaknesses that a liberal-arts education can address. \u201cLiberal arts majors \u2026 are the students who have the active minds, who are asking the big questions,\u201d<\/strong> said Erika Walker, an assistant dean at UC Berkeley\u2019s Haas School of Business. That, she said, was a mindset that all students require. \u201cWhat we need to strive to achieve for the students who aren\u2019t asking the big questions is: challenge yourselves.\u201d&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Businesses want workers who have \u201cthe ability to think, the ability to write, the ability to understand the cultural or historical context of whatever business decision they\u2019re making,\u201d<\/strong> added Rachel Reiser, assistant dean at Boston University\u2019s Questrom School of Business. <strong>If undergraduates want to find success, they need to master those skills<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And <strong>beyond the career advantages that these skills confer, there\u2019s a broader case for offering a liberal-arts education<\/strong> to the hundreds of thousands of students who graduate every year with business degrees. <strong>It doesn\u2019t just increase their economic competitiveness, it also strengthens their ability to contribute to the broader society, and to lead fulfilling lives<\/strong>. \u201cWe as educational institutions have two jobs: to prepare them to enter the profession but also to prepare them as human beings and as citizens,\u201d Iacovou said.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottom line: take more history classes!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2016\/06\/why-americas-business-majors-are-in-desperate-need-of-a-liberal-arts-education\/489209\/?utm_source=atlfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More reasons to study history, this time from The Atlantic.
