Before he sends one of his single-panel cartoons to\u00a0The Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0for possible publication, Richard Rice hands them to his wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s my first editor,\u201d says Rice, professor emeritus<\/a> in the Department of History<\/a> at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. \u201cI give her my latest batch and, if she laughs, I make a little mark on the cartoon. If she doesn\u2019t laugh, it just stays there. She\u2019s gotten very good at predicting what\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0will probably buy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rice, who has been drawing cartoons and selling them since 1975, has had cartoons\u00a0 published in\u00a0Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0Travel section,\u00a0Esquire,<\/em>\u00a0The Chronicle of Higher Education,\u00a0<\/em>even\u00a0Good Housekeeping.\u00a0<\/em>Several years back,\u00a0The Pulse,\u00a0<\/em>the alternative newsweekly in Chattanooga, published a series of his cartoons called \u201cWeasel Cheese.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Dec. 10, he\u2019ll discuss the history of cartoons<\/a> as guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Elder Scholars group. He says he\u2019ll start with William Hogarth\u2019s work in the 1700s, continue on to the intricately drawn cartoons of the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0century, the humorous and satirical cartoons of the\u00a0New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0in the \u201920s and comic books that began in the 1930s.<\/p>\n

It may seem a bit odd that someone who taught history\u2014specifically focusing on Asian history\u2014would have such a DNA-level love of cartoons, but he says it\u2019s been there since he was a kid. It \u00a0grew out of his inescapable love to \u201cdoodle,\u201d he says, a habit that followed him from grade school through high school and into college.<\/p>\n

Whether it was drawing on notebook paper \u00a0in class or napkins while eating or printed information sheets in \u201cboring committee meetings,\u201d he just couldn\u2019t help himself. He says he now has \u201cthousands of pages\u201d of drawings.<\/p>\n

His cartoons are \u201csocial commentary,\u201d he says, insisting that he doesn\u2019t purposely draw political cartoons. But he acknowledges they can be read as having political undertones.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world gets crazier all the time, and I have more ideas than publishing opportunities,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

For the past few years, though, his primary focus for publication has been\u00a0The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, where he sends batches of 10 cartoons on a monthly basis. This year has been especially good, he says, with the newspaper publishing at least one a month.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne month they bought four,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

He only knows that the newspaper published any of his cartoons when he receives a check the month after they\u2019ve run, he says, and the only way he knows which ones were used is by looking at the paycheck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe title of the cartoon will be on the top of the check,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Along with the cartoons, Rice also has taken up watercolor painting since retiring from teaching in 2012. His works are part of an exhibition that begins Friday at the Exum Gallery inside St. Paul\u2019s Episcopal Church and runs until Jan. 12<\/p>\n

\u201cIn retirement, you have time for the creative pursuits,\u201d he says. \u201cThe cartoons pay for the watercolors.\u201d<\/p>\n

He finishes at least one painting per week, he says, and prefers landscapes. At this point, he has completed about 600 paintings with a goal of 1,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike everything else, it\u2019s a lot of practicing, but I\u2019m having a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
