{"id":2495,"date":"2021-04-14T12:48:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T16:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/?p=2495"},"modified":"2025-05-26T11:16:21","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T15:16:21","slug":"student-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/2021\/04\/14\/student-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Student News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Department of History is excited to share news from our amazing majors!<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/2020\/10\/29\/why-i-choose-history-noah-allen-darden\/\">Noah Allen-Darden<\/a><\/strong> has been awarded a UTC Council of Scholars Scholarship for his\u00a0multi-archival thesis project examines campaign records, public correspondence, and personal testimonies to trace the roots and impact of the Southern Strategy within the Democratic Party. Mr. Allen-Darden\u2019s thesis, a geopolitical biography, chronicles the political lives of five prominent national political figures from 1952-1960, including Governor Adlai Stevenson, Senators Harry Byrd and Hubert Humphrey, and Presidents Lyndon Johnson and John F. Kennedy in the Democratic South. His research seeks to uncover the role that internal divisions and irreconcilable differences played in the downfall of the Southern Democratic establishment. Mr. Allen-Darden\u2019s thesis measures politicians\u2019 performance by considering senate debates, polling data, political donations, and newspaper coverage, especially in conjunction with the Young Democrats and High School papers.\u00a0\u00a0Historians identify Richard Nixon\u2019s 1968 Southern Swing as a watershed moment in the realignment of Southern American politics. \u00a0Mr. Allen-Darden\u2019s thesis recasts this historical shift by tracing the fractures <i>within<\/i>\u00a0the Democratic Party\u00a0<i>before<\/i> prominent 1960s liberals dominated the political landscape.
