We\u2019re excited to welcome Dr. Julio Covarrubias Cabeza (Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Hobart and William Smith Colleges) to discuss his research on anticolonial theory and contemporary social and political crises.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Anticolonial Theory for the Twenty-First Century<\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Anticolonial theory emerges in situations of colonial domination, but there have been distinct experiences of colonialism. This talk considers three distinct traditions of anticolonial theory and practice: the Black radical intellectual tradition, critical Indigenous theory, and Latin American anti-imperialist political thought. Unlike mainstream thinking on race, which assumes race relations can be improved through institutional or legal reform, these traditions do not necessarily agree that liberation can be compatible with political liberalism, with the nation-state, with capitalism, or, with integrationist ideology. The purpose of this talk is to both familiarize the audience with these eclipsed\u2014indeed, disavowed\u2014perspectives, as well as to suggest their continued relevance and value.<\/div>\n
