About the Event<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The American West erupted in anti-Chinese violence in 1885. Following the massacre of Chinese miners in Wyoming Territory, more than 165 communities throughout California and the Pacific Northwest harassed, assaulted, and expelled thousands of Chinese migrants. Dr. Beth Lew-Williams will discuss this unprecedented outbreak, place it within the broader history of anti-Asian violence, and reflect on the implications for the present day. As we confront a new surge of anti-Asian hate crimes amid the pandemic, how should history help to inform our response?<\/p>\n

About the Speaker<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Dr. Beth Lew-Williams is Associate Professor of History at Princeton. She is the author of The\u00a0Chinese Must Go: Violence, Exclusion, and the Making of the Alien in America<\/em>\u00a0(Cambridge,\u00a0MA:\u00a0Harvard University Press, 2018) and has published articles, \u201c\u2018Chinamen\u2019\u00a0and \u2018Delinquent Girls\u2019: Intimacy, Exclusion and a Search for California\u2019s Color\u00a0Line\u201d\u00a0in the\u00a0Journal of\u00a0American History\u00a0<\/em>and \u201cBefore\u00a0Restriction Became Exclusion: America\u2019s Experiment in Diplomatic Immigration\u00a0Control\u201d\u00a0in the\u00a0Pacific Historical\u00a0Review.\u00a0<\/em>Dr. Lew-Williams holds research interests in race and migration in the United States, specializing in Asian American history.<\/p>\n
