Years? Decades? And how are they remembered, not only by the colonized and colonizer, but also their descendants?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2146\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2146\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fang Yu Hu\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-580x870.jpg 580w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-610x915.jpg 610w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-133x200.jpg 133w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2020\/12\/Hu.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fang Yu Hu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">In this episode of <em>EAFA, <\/em>we again examine the fraught history of Japanese imperialism on the island of Taiwan, which was a colony of imperial Japan from 1895 to 1945. <em>Cape No. 7 <\/em>(\u6d77\u89d2\u4e03\u865f, <em>H\u01ceiji\u01ceo Q\u012b H\u00e0o<\/em>) by Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng (\u9b4f\u5fb7\u8056, who also directed <em>Warriors of the Rainbow<\/em>) is a romantic comedy about two intercultural couples (Taiwanese and Japanese) in the 1940s and the 2000s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Part zany comedy, part melodramatic romance, the movie is set in Hengchun, Taiwan and the main plot centers around efforts to set up a concert on the beach, where a Japanese pop star is scheduled to perform. The main character, Aga, is a failed postman who teams up with other Hengchun locals to form a band for the concert and also falls for Tomoko, an unsuccessful Japanese model who is coordinating for the event. As this main plot unfolds, Aga also opens an undeliverable package that contains a letter from a Japanese teacher who left his Taiwanese lover after the end of the Japanese occupation in 1945. Aga struggles with how (or if he should) find its rightful recipient.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2555\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-300x137.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-300x137.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-1024x467.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-768x350.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-580x264.jpeg 580w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-610x278.jpeg 610w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-250x114.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1-600x274.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2021\/08\/cape-no-7image1.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/a>Through the relationships of these different characters \u2014 Aga and Tomoko &amp; the older lovers from the Japanese colonial era \u2014 director Wei shows us the intimate layers of human relationships that form within the matrix of Japanese colonization. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/thechinabeat.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/in-case-you-missed-it-cape-no-7.html\">historians such as Peter Zarrow<\/a> have perceptively noted that the \u201csentimental indulgence\u201d of <em>Cape No. 7 <\/em>also glosses over much of the trauma of the colonial period in favor of reconciliation. How to characterize both the colonial period, as well as Taiwan\u2019s current relationship to Japan, is an understated and unresolved tension throughout the film.<\/p>\n<p>We are very excited to be joined on this episode by <a id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1629817351239_494\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/directory\/vkw217-history-fang-yu-hu\/vkw217\">Dr. Fang Yu Hu<\/a>, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
