{"id":2826,"date":"2022-03-03T18:01:20","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T23:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/?p=2826"},"modified":"2025-05-26T11:19:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T15:19:53","slug":"no-protection-in-georgia-lecture-on-3-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/2022\/03\/03\/no-protection-in-georgia-lecture-on-3-10\/","title":{"rendered":"No Protection in Georgia &#8212; Lecture on 3\/10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u201cNo Protection in Georgia: Black Political Participation in Reconstruction Era Georgia\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Dr. Alicia Jackson, Covenant College<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Thursday, March 10, 2022<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Lupton 105\u00a0 6:00<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In her talk, Dr. Jackson will explore the choice made by many formerly enslaved people in Georgia to fully realize their freedom, specifically through political activity.\u00a0 Challenging the prevalent narrative that Black leaders simply acquiesced to the wishes and goals of their former masters, Dr. Jackson will demonstrate that many Black political and religious leaders worked subtly but, nevertheless, tirelessly against oppressive conditions in Georgia that ultimately would result in a Black exodus from the state.\u00a0 Dr. Jackson\u2019s talk rises from content in her new book, <em>The Recovered Life of Isaac Anderson<\/em>, which<em>\u00a0<\/em>reconstructs the lost history of a man born enslaved who became a religious and community leader in the South.\u00a0 Jackson traces strategies used by Black southerners to challenge growing restrictions of their rights during the Reconstruction Era through the early twentieth century. Anderson\u2019s story and those of the countless other Black leaders \u201clost\u201d to history represents Black resistance as Jim Crow legislation was becoming synonymous with the region.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2022\/03\/Jackson-March-10-2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2827\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2022\/03\/Jackson-March-10-2022-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2022\/03\/Jackson-March-10-2022-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2022\/03\/Jackson-March-10-2022-250x189.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/files\/2022\/03\/Jackson-March-10-2022.jpg 436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dr. Alicia Jackson is an Associate Professor of History at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. She currently leads a student-based research project known as the District Hill Cemetery Project. With most of the grave markers are gone, the community-based project focuses on recovering the lost history and stories of a vibrant Black community located in Chickamauga, Georgia. Among her recent publications include \u201cHaving Our Own: The Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and the Struggle for Black Autonomy in Education,\u201d which was published in <em>Southern Religions, Southern Cultures: Essays Honoring Charles Reagan Wilson<\/em> by University Press of Mississippi.\u00a0 She was awarded a Louisville Project Grant for Researchers in 2016 for her book <em>The Recovered Life of Isaac Anderson <\/em>(November 2021) published by University Press of Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This presentation is sponsored by The Adolph S.
