During Fall Break 2017, Dr. Michael Thompson<\/a> led students from his senior seminar on the history of urban slavery (HIST 4500: Slavery in the Cities) on a study trip to Charleston, South Carolina, where they experienced the McLeod Plantation, the Old Slave Mart Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Nathaniel Russell House, a Gullah bus tour, the Charleston Museum, and the joint archives of the South Carolina Historical Society and the College of Charleston\u2019s Special Collections. Participants also enjoyed some delicious local cuisine and were afforded a couple of hours each evening to explore additional cultural and historic sites in downtown Charleston, including the City Market, Fireproof Building, St. Michael\u2019s and St. Philip\u2019s Episcopal churches and cemeteries, Waterfront Park, White Point Gardens, and the Denmark Vesey statue in Hampton Park.<\/p>\n

This experiential learning trip received generous support from a High-Impact Practices Development Grant and the Department of History.<\/p>\n

During Spring Break 2018, Dr. Thompson will return to Charleston with fifteen students from UHON 3510: Slavery in the Land of Liberty.<\/p>\n
