{"id":485,"date":"2018-02-13T15:13:12","date_gmt":"2018-02-13T20:13:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/?p=485"},"modified":"2025-05-22T07:17:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T11:17:08","slug":"history-beyond-the-classroom-preserving-chattanoogas-african-american-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/history\/2018\/02\/13\/history-beyond-the-classroom-preserving-chattanoogas-african-american-history\/","title":{"rendered":"History Beyond the Classroom: Preserving Chattanooga&#8217;s African-American History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #999999\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p>UTC History students and interns are taking a hands-on approach to learning history &#8212; they&#8217;re preserving history.<\/p>\n<p>Randall Shular, an intern in Special Collections from\u00a0the Department of History, worked with the UTC Library to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/library\/special-collections\/exhibits\/ed-johnson.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">featured exhibit<\/a> on Ed Johnson, who\u00a0was lynched by a mob in Chattanooga in 1906.\u00a0The exhibit explores the role of the local media in criminalizing Ed Johnson and inciting the violence that led to his murder.\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edjohnsonproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Johnson Project<\/a>, a<b>\u00a0<\/b>diverse community committee committed\u00a0to telling the story of Ed Johnson through a memorial, documentary, and scholarship, promotes\u00a0racial healing and reconciliation in Chattanooga by creating a permanent memorial which acknowledges the lynching of Ed Johnson, honors the courageous work of the attorneys and others who stood up for equal justice, and recognizes the resulting United States Supreme Court case that established federal oversight of state level civil rights issues then and now.<\/p>\n<p>In her course, African American Women, Assistant Professor of History\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/history\/profiles\/faculty\/hzt191.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susan Eckelmann Berghel<\/a>\u00a0has students engage with history beyond the textbooks, getting personal with local \u00a0history makers and recording their stories and perspectives. The end result is the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/students-document-lives-african-american-women-chattanooga-mayor-councils-initiative-tell-herstories\/?utm_source=Copy+of+UTC+University+News%3A+February+2018&amp;utm_campaign=University+News&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Voices of African American Women Oral History project<\/a>.\u00a0The project partners with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/connect.chattanooga.gov\/councilforwomen\/councilforwomenabout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayor\u2019s Council for Women<\/a>\u2019s History subcommittee, a group that is recovering, archiving and publishing the experiences of local women leaders, advocates, educators and community builders.
