*<\/span>UTC\u2019s Department of History<\/a> and the Africana Studies<\/a> program are pleased to welcome 2010\u00a0Lillian Smith Book Award recipient\u00a0and\u00a0Los Angeles Times Book Award\u00a0finalist Dr. Amy Wood\u00a0of\u00a0Illinois State University\u00a0to deliver the 5th<\/sup>\u00a0annual Africana Studies Lecture on\u00a0Monday, September 17, at 5pm\u00a0(Eastern Time<\/em>) in Derthick Hall 101. Free and open to the public, Professor\u00a0Wood\u2019s talk will present a historical perspective on the 1906\u00a0lynching of Ed Johnson.\u00a0Questions may be directed to event organizer Dr. Susan Eckelmann Berghel at<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Susan-Eckelmann@utc.edu<\/a>\u00a0or (423) 425-5621. Brief Speaker Bio<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Professor Wood specializes in post-Civil War American cultural history and the history of the U.S. South. She is the author of<\/span>\u00a0Lynching and Spectacle: Witnessing Racial Violence in America, 1890-1940<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(University of North Carolina Press, 2009).\u00a0which examines visual representations of lynching and the construction of white supremacy in the Jim Crow era.\u00a0Lynching and Spectacle<\/em>\u00a0won the Lillian Smith Book Award and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award in History. She is also the co-guest editor of issue of\u00a0Mississippi Quarterly<\/em>\u00a0on lynching, representation, and memory (2008), the editor of the volume on violence for the\u00a0New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture<\/em>\u00a0(University of North Carolina Press, 2011). Her edited collection,\u00a0Crime and Punishment in the Jim Crow South,<\/em>\u00a0will be published in 2019 by the University of Illinois Press. She is currently working on a book project on cultural ideas about criminality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.<\/span><\/h4>\n
