A University of Tennessee at Chattanooga mechanical engineering student, Connor Mackey, designed a custom 3D‑printed helmet to protect Niblet, a rescue Chihuahua born with a soft spot in his skull (hydrocephalus). Assisted by Prof. Trevor Elliott and a Volkswagen volunteer who scanned the pup’s head, Mackey iterated more than a dozen prototypes until the final design was safe, comfortable, and effective.
