Due to an aging server, we have to move the rest of our public workstations to UTC’s Active Directory for user login. This results in several changes to the public workstation configuration:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Login looks different<\/a> unless you have an XP computer. It’s like your workstation: Ctrl-Alt-Del to login.<\/li>\n
  2. Login times are slow due to the age of our computers.<\/li>\n
  3. The user experience is going to be mostly stock Windows XP, with rolling hills wallpaper, etc.<\/li>\n
  4. Firefox has all the new installation defaults (import from IE, home page, etc.).**<\/li>\n
  5. IE has pop-ups blocked.**<\/li>\n
  6. Other application defaults may be different.<\/li>\n
  7. Office prompts for user name and initials every time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    **Working on these.<\/p>\n

    If a students cannot log in and changing the password does not fix it, the help desk will need to look into it. You can help the student create a ticket<\/a> or call 4000 as ususal. (If the student is a “new user” for the help desk’s ticket tracking system, LDAP ID and password are the UTC credentials.)<\/p>\n

    I hope to use this week as a public test with a complete deployment next weekend. The testing computers are the first row on the first floor and the section by the printer on the second floor.<\/p>\n

    As with any change, there will be complaints.<\/strong> Please leave any useful comments below.<\/p>\n

    Please consider taking a minute to log in to one to get a feel for it. Also, please have student workers that staff service desks do the same.<\/p>\n

    Laptops are not changing at this time.<\/p>\n

    I know this isn’t the best time to do this, but due to budget issues and aging hardware, it couldn’t be put off any longer. Let me know if you have any questions.<\/p>\n
