{"id":1064,"date":"2011-02-21T13:03:56","date_gmt":"2011-02-21T13:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=1064"},"modified":"2013-09-16T13:18:24","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T13:18:24","slug":"george-washingtons-teeth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2011\/02\/21\/george-washingtons-teeth\/","title":{"rendered":"George Washington&#8217;s Teeth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-washingtons-teeth-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1068\" title=\"George Washington's Teeth\" alt=\"George Washington's Teeth\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2011\/02\/GWs-teeth.jpg\" width=\"491\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>image from the Library of Congress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/library_of_congress\/2162723195\/\">Flickr stream<\/a>.\u00a0 no copyright restrictions exist.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In honor of <strong>President&#8217;s Day<\/strong>, or George Washington&#8217;s birthday (observed), we present an interesting little bit of ephemera from one of our manuscript collections, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utc.edu\/manuscripts-history.html#Callahan\">North Callahan Collection<\/a>.\u00a0 A 1930 University of Chattanooga alumnus, and a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from this university, Dr. Callahan taught History at New York University and wrote several historical biographies, including a biography of George Washington.\u00a0 The bit (see below) that we are including did not show up in his book, but was likely a working draft for a newspaper article.\u00a0 Keep in mind that at the time this article was written, likely in the 1970&#8217;s, typewriters, not computers, were in use.\u00a0 Note the unusual composition of one set of dentures in the Callahan article.
