{"id":1124,"date":"2011-04-01T07:08:33","date_gmt":"2011-04-01T07:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=1124"},"modified":"2013-09-16T12:48:41","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T12:48:41","slug":"the-cats-out-of-the-bag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2011\/04\/01\/the-cats-out-of-the-bag\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cat&#8217;s Out of the Bag!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-steve-and-his-cat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-1123\" title=\"Steve &amp; Gabriel\" alt=\"Steve &amp; Gabriel\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2011\/03\/Me-and-Gabriel-1024x767.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a><em><strong> Steve with Dusty on one of our first visits with him at the HSUS.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soon, when visiting UTC\u2019s Special Collections, you might encounter the archive\u2019s\u00a0 newest \u201cemployee\u201d- <strong>Dusty<\/strong>, our archives kitty.\u00a0 Through a series of discussions that have been several months in the making, the Special Collections has finally decided to announce its newest marketing strategy.\u00a0 We believe that the addition of a furry feline will create the \u201c<em>purr-fect<\/em>\u201d amount of ambiance and buzz.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Cox, Head of Special Collections and University Archivist, says \u201cIt took a while for Chapel to sell me on the idea, but I am 100% behind it.\u00a0 The introduction of a cat into the Special Collections holds a lot of promise.\u00a0 People tend to have this misperception of an archive as a <strong>musty old cave<\/strong>&#8211; stodgy and unwelcoming .\u00a0 We intend to turn that stereotype on its head with the introduction of Dusty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of you might be thinking that a cat in the Special Collections is not such a great idea.\u00a0 <strong>Hello, hairballs? <\/strong> Because we believe whole-heartedly in providing a home for a rescued animal, we made our selection at the Humane Society approximately 2 months ago.\u00a0 They actually have a trainer on staff who we solicited to work on some basic training with Dusty.\u00a0 For example, he has been trained not to jump up on tables or laps without permission- a necessary bit of training if we hope to keep <strong>\u201clitter paws\u201d<\/strong> off of our rare documents and patrons.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I am really excited about this new addition.\u00a0 We\u2019ve bought a harness for Dusty and I will be walking him around campus from time to time to introduce him to the UTC community.\u00a0\u00a0 We&#8217;ve custom ordered a <strong>Mocs<\/strong> football jersey for him &amp; will be bringing him to the games (hopefully this won&#8217;t make the mockingbird mascot nervous).\u00a0 Steve adds, \u201cI have two cats at home and I really miss them during the day.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait to have a new snuggle buddy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to stop by and look for Dusty on his first day, April 31!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steve with Dusty on one of our first visits with him at the HSUS.
