{"id":1153,"date":"2011-04-21T08:25:18","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T08:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=1153"},"modified":"2013-09-16T12:49:04","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T12:49:04","slug":"a-billion-acts-of-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2011\/04\/21\/a-billion-acts-of-green\/","title":{"rendered":"A Billion Acts of Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-planting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1156\" title=\"Planting\" alt=\"Planting\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2011\/04\/4546183151_2ebc089570_o.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a> <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Official Cemex Images and used in accordance with Creative Commons license 2.0.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, April 22, is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth_Day\">Earth Day<\/a>!\u00a0 Here in the Special Collections we strive to reuse materials when possible and recycle all that we can.\u00a0 The nature of an archive, and libraries in general, is to recycle and reuse our materials.\u00a0 <strong>In fact, I would venture to say that we are the ultimate recyclers<\/strong>.\u00a0 We save trees by purchasing print materials that can be utilized by many.\u00a0 When we no longer need our print materials we hold a book sale.\u00a0 We are increasingly offering materials exclusively online, which saves some serious paper!\u00a0 Not to mention eliminating the pollution associated with traveling to view a collection or resource.<\/p>\n<p>In the Special Collections we currently: recycle all paper, glass, cans, batteries, and plastics (that are recyclable).\u00a0 We reuse all folders and boxes and once we can no longer recycle a folder for its original purpose, we use it as box filler for small collections and padding for large materials.\u00a0 We use CFL&#8217;s in our lamps.\u00a0 No matter how much you do at home or at work to reduce your environmental impact however, there is always a little more that you can do.\u00a0 Here in the Special Collections we are making a new environmental pledge for the coming year.\u00a0 With all of the materials that we already recycle, it had not occurred to us to recycle our inkjet cartridges.\u00a0 Many charities will actually accept your used inkjet cartridges for recycling.\u00a0 When they turn them in, they get funds for the charity.\u00a0 We have not yet decided which charity we will recycle through, but we are excited about the opportunity!<\/p>\n<p>Make a pledge of your own for Earth Day.\u00a0 For more information, see the <a title=\"Earth Day Network Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthday.org\/\">Earth Day Network website<\/a>.\u00a0 The theme of this year&#8217;s Earth Day is <strong><em>A Billion Acts of Green<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Join us and submit an &#8220;Act of Green&#8221; on their website <a href=\"http:\/\/act.earthday.org\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Happy Earth Day!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo by Official Cemex Images and used in accordance with Creative Commons license 2.0.
