Cup in hand, eyes on work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Previously on this blog, we have shared a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/2010\/08\/18\/a-day-in-the-life-of-an-archivist-well-sort-of\/\">day in the life of an archivist<\/a>, but we focused more upon activities that we <strong><em>might<\/em><\/strong> be doing rather than the ones we were <em><strong>actually<\/strong><\/em> doing.\u00a0 This time around we have decided to share an <strong>actual day<\/strong> and kill two birds with one stone.\u00a0 First, we are participating in the <a href=\"http:\/\/librarianbyday.net\/2012\/01\/16\/library-day-in-the-life-round-8-coming-soon-libday8\/\">Library Day in the Life Project<\/a>, through which library folks all over the world share what a day in their professional lives looks like.\u00a0 Secondly, we thought it might be cool for our readers to see what the archivists do all day up in their dusty old cave.\u00a0 Steve will be sitting this one out, so it&#8217;s all me this time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Tuesday, January 31<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>8:00am\u00a0 Put my kettle on.\u00a0 No, I&#8217;m not British, but I do drink hot tea <strong>ALL DAY<\/strong>.\u00a0 I will leave further references to tea drinking out since, like I said, I do it <strong>ALL DAY<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>8:05am\u00a0 Check a ridiculous amount of emails-mostly listserv junk.\u00a0 Really folks, do we have to have 10 emails discussing what exactly is meant by a linear foot?<\/p>\n<p>8:15am\u00a0 Volunteer to assist grad school with information table at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnla.org\/\">Tennessee Library Association<\/a> annual conference because I&#8217;m a kind person.\u00a0 Are you listening, Steve?<\/p>\n<p>8:30ish am\u00a0 Create monthly report for my work in ye olde Special Collections<\/p>\n<p>9:00ish am\u00a0 Continue working on an outstanding reference request which entails poring over catalogs, bulletins, and primary source material from the last 100ish years.\u00a0 I have to <strong>elbow Steve out of the way<\/strong> to get any work in on this project.<\/p>\n<p>10:30am\u00a0 Patron comes in to do some research.\u00a0 He&#8217;s someone we know, so we talk shop for a good amount of time and get an update on the progress of a gallery he&#8217;s designing on the role of African Americans in our town&#8217;s history.\u00a0 Really interesting stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Noon-ish\u00a0 Completed a finding aid for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jjaudubongallery.com\/About%20Amsterdams.htm\">Amsterdam Edition<\/a> of John J. Audubon&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/web4.audubon.org\/bird\/boa\/boa_index.html\">Birds of America <\/a>print collection.\u00a0 Then did the 20 million things I do with a finding aid.\u00a0 Produce it in PDF, EAD XML, and HTML.\u00a0 Modify the HTML. Create a MARC XML record and save it for our cataloger.\u00a0 Upload documents to the server to put in our finding aid index.\u00a0 Link it to collection descriptions.\u00a0 Blah, blah, blah&#8230;I think you get the picture.<\/p>\n<p>1:20 or was it 2:00?
